LYNCHBURG, Va. – Duke baseball fell to Liberty, 13-10, on Tuesday, April 21. The Blue Devils (22-21) led by four runs after six innings of play, before the host Flames (29-11) rallied late for the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both starting pitchers logged a clean opening frame, with Duke's starter, Drew Bryan, working around a one-out single by forcing a ground ball and double play to quickly end the frame.
- Duke struck for three runs in the top of the second, taking a 3-0 lead. Bobby Marsh laced a two-run homer over the fence in right field and Jake Lambdin brought Coltin Quagliano home on a single to left. The Flames answered, with two runs in the home half, making it a 3-2 ballgame heading to the third inning.
- The Blue Devils exploded for five runs in the third, highlighted by Matthew Strand's home run with one out, his 10th long ball of the season. Four more runs came across via RBI singles, with Marsh, Tyler Albright, Lambdin and RJ Hamilton all logging run-scoring knocks to give Duke an 8-2 lead.
- Jack Feehery entered in the bottom of the third and allowed a pair of unearned runs. The sophomore then buckled down, throwing three perfect innings to keep Duke in front, 8-4, through six full innings. Â
- The Flames pulled within two, 8-6, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, before Duke's added a tally in the top of the eighth. Liberty scored seven in the bottom of the eighth, grabbing control, 13-9.
- Marsh slapped an RBI single in the top of the ninth, his sixth run driven in on the night, but Duke couldn't complete the rally.
