DURHAM, N.C. - With at least two runs in four of its six trips to the plate, Duke run-ruled Miami, 20-10, in seven innings at Jack Coombs Field Sunday, March 15. The Blue Devils (15-7, 3-3 ACC) picked up their first ACC series win of the season on the back of six different players with at least two RBI, led by
Matthew Strand's six-RBI day with a grand slam in the first inning and a two-run homer in the third inning.
Duke reached the 20-run threshold in a conference game for the first time since a 20-14 victory at Maryland on April 17, 1992 and scored 20 runs for the second time this season, after defeating Milwaukee, 20-3, on Feb. 20.
Kaden Smith and
Brooks Perez joined Strand in leaving the yard, with Smith tallying his the third homer of his season and Perez ending the game in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run shot. As a team, the Blue Devils worked 12 walks, led by
Tyler Albright, who increased his nation-leading walk total to 32 for the season. On the basepaths, Duke swiped eight bags, to give the Blue Devils 96 stolen bases already this season, trailing the program's single-season record (106) by just 10.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Andy Leon opened the contest with a clean top of the first in just eight pitches. Duke's offense immediately got on the board, loading the bases for Matthew Strand, who blasted a grand slam over Duke's bullpen in left field.
- The visitors responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second, courtesy of two RBI singles.
- Strand left the yard for the second time, poking a fly ball over the right-field fence for a two-run home run in the bottom of the third.
- Miami leveled the score at 6-6 in the top of the fourth, bringing home one run with a double to left center and following up with a three-run home run to left field.
- The Blue Devils answered right back, plating a pair of unearned runs crossing in the bottom of the fourth.
- The Hurricanes took the lead for the first time, with a two-run homer to center field in the top of the fifth. Duke once again promptly answered, with a nine spot in the bottom half, taking a 17-9 lead into the sixth frame.
- After a fielder's choice allowed a Miami run to cross the plate, Kaden Smith homered in the home half of the sixth to make it an 18-10 lead for Duke.
- A clean top of the seventh by Aiden O'Connell set the table for Brooks Perez, who ended the contest with a two-run homer to cap the 20-10 run-rule victory.
- Jack Hedrick was awarded the win, moving his record to 2-0, while Miami's Packy Bradley-Cooney was tagged with the loss, his first of the year.Â
