WILMINGTON, N.C. – Duke received a stellar day at the plate from
Cider Canon, as the Blue Devils (8-2) scored six unanswered to tally a 6-3 win at UNCW on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Canon went 3-for-5 and logged the go-ahead hit, driving in two in the top of the seventh, giving Duke a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
On the mound, freshman
Jordan Regulski made his second career start, throwing 2.2 innings, with just one of his three runs allowed registering as earned.
Bennett LaPalm was credited with the win, while
Aiden O'Connell earned the save, his second of the season. As a whole, Duke's pitching staff relinquished just four hits, its fourth game this season with four or fewer hits allowed.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke was retired in order to start the game and Jordan Regulski took the mound in the bottom of the first for his second career start. The freshman pitched a clean inning, forcing a groundout and two flyouts, highlighted by a sliding catch in right field by Adin Zorn.
- The Seahawks took the lead in the bottom of the third after a throwing error. A sacrifice fly scored the second run of the inning and after Marcello Mastroianni entered with the bases loaded, an infield hit brought home the third run of the frame.
- Duke quickly loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, as RJ Hamilton and Cider Canon both hit singles through the left side and Tyler Albright reached on a disengagement violation by the UNCW pitcher.
- Bobby Marsh drove in the Blue Devils' first run with a sacrifice fly. Adin Zorn logged an RBI groundout to bring Duke back within one, 3-2, heading into the bottom of the fourth.
- After a clean half inning from Mastroianni, the Blue Devils knotted the score with a two-out RBI single from Hamilton, scoring Coltin Quagliano. In the bottom of the fifth, Peter Lemke entered and allowed a leadoff single, before closing the half inning with a double play and strikeout looking.
- Duke edged in front in the top of the seventh, courtesy of a two-RBI single from Canon, bringing home Jake Lambdin and Hamilton.
- The Blue Devils added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, as Lambdin sent his second homer of the season out to left field. Aiden O'Connell entered in the bottom of the frame, registered two strikeouts en route to his second save of the year.
