DURHAM, N.C. - Three different innings with at least five runs propelled Duke to a 20-3 victory over Milwaukee on Friday, Feb. 20. The Blue Devils (5-1) scored at least 20 runs in a game for the first time since posting 23Â runs against Longwood on May 5, 2024, while
Aidan Weaver started on the mound and earned his second win of the season.Â
Trevor Johnson and
Harley Goodner both tallied their first career home run in each of their first career at-bats. Four other Blue Devils posted multi-RBI outings -
Tyler Albright (three),
Cider Canon (two),
Jake Lambdin (two) and
Adin Zorn (two). On the mound, Weaver started his day with six strikeouts through two innings, finishing his five innings of work with nine total punchouts, allowing just two runs and two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Aidan Weaver struck out the side to start the contest, Duke got on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI groundout from Tyler Albright and an RBI single by Adin Zorn. Three more strikeouts from Weaver in the top of the second gave the senior six consecutive K's to start the contest.
- Weaver's seventh strikeout was sandwiched between two groundouts in the top of the third, before Cider Canon started the bottom half by finding the outfield gap for an RBI triple, scoring RJ Hamilton from first base.
- Duke's scoring continued on the next pitch, as Albright brought home Canon with a single. An infield single by Michael DiMartini three batters later scored Albright, before Jake Lambdin capped the five-run frame with a two-RBI single, bringing home Adin Zorn and DiMartini.Â
- Weaver allowed his only two runs off a home run in the top of the fifth, finishing the frame and his outing with just two hits allowed. Duke posted seven runs in the bottom of the fifth, starting with Bobby Marsh coming home on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch brought DiMartini home and Hamilton drove in a run after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Canon and Albright followed with consecutive sacrifice flies, before back-to-back RBI doubles from Zorn and Marsh capped the seven-run frame for the Blue Devils.
- Aiden O'Connell replaced Weaver in the top of the sixth, allowing a lone run on an RBI single. The Blue Devils continued the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, with the first two runs coming off a wild pitch and a throwing error. Trevor Johnson then took a 2-1 pitch 431 feet to right feet, clearing the scoreboard for a three-run home run and Harley Goodner followed suit two batters later, going to straightaway center for a solo homer.
- Edward Hart pitched the seventh for Duke, securing the 20-3 run-rule victory.
