DURHAM, N.C. – A dominant offensive performance surged the Duke volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-8, 17-25, 25-17, 25-14) triumph over Utah Valley Friday night inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils improved to a 3-5 ledger on the year, while the Wolverines dropped to a 3-5 record.
Sophomore outside hitter Taylor Williams led Duke's offense with 16 terminations and freshman attacker Olivia Wayne tallied 12 putaways, while freshman setter Charlotte Glass led the Blue Devils in assists dishing out 32 helpers.
Sophomore libero Mailinh Godschall posted a match-best 13 digs while freshman middle blocker Zoë Gilen-Malveaux and Glass earned five blocks apiece.
How It Happened
Set One – Duke 25, Utah Valley 8
- The Blue Devils earned the first frame, 25-8. Duke held the 8-5 advantage before posting five straight points to push its lead out to 13-5. UVU added three points, but the Blue Devils closed out the set with 10 straight points. Williams led the offense with six kills, while Gillen-Malveaux and Wayne notched two denials at the net apiece.
Set Two – Duke 17, Utah Valley 25
- The Wolverines tied the match, 1-1, with a 25-17 win in the second set. The frame was tied five times, but UVU earned six straight points, to push past its 14-11 advantage and take the 20-11 lead. UVU limited Duke to just six more points the rest of the frame and closed the set with a kill. Williams surged Duke's offense with five kills, while Wayne and redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh garnered two blocks each.
Set Three – Duke 25, Utah Valley 17
- Duke claimed the third set, 25-17, retaking the match's lead. UVU had the 10-6 edge before Duke tallied five consecutive points to take the 11-10 advantage. The Blue Devils and Wolverines traded points, but Duke pushed past the 12-12 lockup with three marks, earning the 15-12 lead. UVU earned a point, but Duke snapped the visitors' momentum with another run of five points. The set was closed with an attack error from the Wolverines. Williams tallied four kills to lead the set for Duke.
Set Four – Duke 25, Utah Valley 14
- The Blue Devils clinched the match with a 25-14 win in the fourth frame. Duke established a 12-5 advantage after going on a six-point run. UVU responded with a kill before the teams traded four points, with Duke maintaining a 17-10 advantage. Duke forced two errors and Wayne notched a termination to finish the match and secure the 25-14 win.
