ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay β The USA Field Hockey U21 Women's National Team kicked off in Junior Pan American Games with a dominant 8-0 victory over Mexico in Pool B action. The Blue Devils are represented by a trio of current players in
Madison Beach,
Alaina McVeigh and
Macy Szukics.
All three Blue Devils were in the starting lineup for the sixth-ranked United States squad, and it was McVeigh putting the red, white and blue up 1-0 with a penalty stroke in the third minute.
McVeigh added a blast off a penalty corner and provided an assist as her hit from the top of the circle was deflected in for the 3-0 advantage. The United States led 5-0 at halftime and tacked on three more goals in the second half to move to the top of the Pool B standings.
The United States will face its toughest opponent in pool play Wednesday morning when it takes on Chile at 10:30 am (ET). Group action wraps up Friday, Aug. 15 against Guyana at 8:30 a.m.
The winner from each group will take on the runner-up from the other side of the standings and will meet in the semifinals Aug. 17. The goal and bronze medal matches take place Aug. 19.
