EUGENE, Ore. – The Duke women's track and field team carded a strong day of competition as six Blue Devils concluded the evening as United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Americans.
Braelyn Baker,
Mia Edim,
Aliya Garozzo,
Abby Geiser and
Meredith Sims all garnered USTFCCCA All-America Second Team accolades, while
Gemma Tutton received an honorable mention nod.
Additionally, the Blue Devil women pushed four individuals through to Championship Saturday as Baker,
Lauren Tolbert and the women's 4x400m – comprised of Baker,
Julia Jackson,
Megan McGinnis and Tolbert – all secured spots in their respective event finals.
TOP PERFORMANCES:
- Duke opened its Thursday slate in the women's 4x100m where the Blue Devil contingent of sophomore Mia Edim, seniors Abby Geiser and Meredith Sims and freshman Braelyn Baker sprinted their way to USTFCCCA All-America Second Team status. The quartet turned in a time of 43.77 seconds, placing 16th overall.
- Junior Lauren Tolbert put on a dazzling display of running in the women's 800m event, parlaying a personal-best performance into an automatic berth to Saturday's final. Tolbert blazed to the second-fastest time in both her heat and the entire field overall, clocking 1:59.39 to improve her own school record. With her efforts, Tolbert became the first Duke woman to post a sub-two minute time in the outdoor 800m.
- Baker and graduate student Aliya Garozzo represented the Blue Devils in the women's 400m hurdles, which saw Baker register a personal best en route to securing her spot in the final and Garozzo cap her season as a second-team all-american. Baker improved her No. 4 all-time mark in program lore and crossed the finish line 56.35 seconds to place among the top nine, while Garozzo's time of 57.37 seconds was good for 14th overall.
- Rounding out the first day of women's action for the Blue Devils was the 4x400m relay which saw Baker, juniors Julia Jackson and Tolbert and senior Megan McGinnis showcase a dazzling display of running to secure a spot in Saturday's event final. The quartet produced the second fastest time in its respective heat and the seventh best of the overall field, reeling in the automatic berth by way of a 3:28.98 finish.
- Sophomore Gemma Tutton also competed in the women's pole vault on Thursday and cleared 4.09m (13-5 feet) to earn USTFCCCA All-America Honorable Mention status.
