PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The 11th-ranked Blue Devils won their fifth consecutive game with a 14-10 victory versus Pittsburgh at Highmark Stadium Saturday afternoon. The offense was led by graduate student
Callie Hem, who netted six goals and dished out an assist to give her seven points for the day.
The Blue Devils improve to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in ACC games, while Pitt falls to 6-7 overall and 1-6 in conference.
Besides Hem's six goals, the Blue Devil offense saw a hat trick from senior
Carly Bernstein. Sophomore
Bella Goodwin scored two goals, while redshirt sophomore
Ava Biancardi, freshman
Maddie MacDonald and redshirt freshman
Lena Doreen each added one. Redshirt sophomore
Eva Pronti was once again Duke's top distributor, dishing out four assists.
On the defensive end, senior
Reilly Traynor led with two caused turnovers and redshirt junior
Kennedy Everson recorded six saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hem gave Duke the 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the game by converting her free-position shot.
- Pittsburgh answered with a three-goal run to take a 3-1 lead. During that stretch—from the 12:02 mark to just 51 seconds left in the first period—Panthers' goalkeeper Molly Cain kept the Blue Devils off the board, recording four saves.
- Bernstein snapped the Panthers' run by slotting in a goal with 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
- Duke opened the second quarter with a four-goal scoring run to take a 6-3 lead.
- Biancardi buried her free position shot at the 13:01 mark, and just over a minute later, Doreen found the back of the cage. Both goals came from Bernstein assists.
- Hem found the back of the cage twice, converting her free-position shot at the 10:48 mark, and netted a goal off a Pronti feed at the 4:55 mark to round out the Duke scoring run.
- Pitt responded by slotting in three goals, stretching from the 4:14 mark to the 3:29 mark, to tie the game at 6-6.
- Bernstein netted the final goal of the first half, with 1:54 remaining, sending the Blue Devils into the locker room up 7-6.
- In the first half, Duke outshot the Panthers 19-12, were 4-5 on free-position shots and were 10-11 on clears.
- Duke opened the third quarter with a Bernstein goal off a Hem assist to take the 8-6 lead. Pitt responded, scoring at the 9:55 mark and 6:08 mark, to tie the game, 8-8.
- Duke pushed past the 8-8 tie with a three-goal scoring run.
- Pronti fed Hem, who scored her fourth goal of the game, and under a minute later, Pronti connected with Hem again to take the 10-8 lead. MacDonald netted her free-position shot to extend Duke's lead to 11-8.
- The Panthers got the final goal of the third period with 1:22 remaining.
- Duke entered the final period up, 11-9.
- Everson recorded three saves to open the fourth period to maintain Duke's 11-9 lead. The Blue Devils' offense was quiet until Goodwin slotted in two goals to push Duke's lead to 13-9.
- Hem scored her sixth and final goal of the day off a feed from Pronti, securing Duke's 14-10 triumph.
