QUERETARO, Mexico — Duke wrestling assistant coach
Tom Erikson helped lead Team USA to the U-23 Pan American Championship over the weekend at Auditorio General José María Arteaga in Queretaro, Mexico. Erikson was one of the coaches that helped lead the United States to win eight gold medals in men's freestyle with all 10 athletes finishing on the podium.

In total, Team USA went 33-2 in Queretaro, Mexico, with 18 wins by technical fall, eight wins by fall and five wins by decision.

The United States dominated the team race, scoring 205 points. Canada earned 132 points for a runner-up finish, while Cuba followed in third with 100 points. Puerto Rico and Mexico rounded out the top five in the team standings.

Erikson, who joined the Duke wrestling staff in August of 2020, owns more than 30 years of coaching experience. Widely recognized as one of the top United States heavyweight wrestlers of all-time, he was an elite competitor on the international level for several years, a two-time All-America honoree at Oklahoma State and a two-time NJCAA Junior Collegiate Champion at Triton College.

It marked the second time over the last three years Erikson has helped the United States at the Pan American Championships. Erikson guided the U-20 team to 10 medals in 2022 in Mexico as well.Â
