Bonsu Places Seventh at USA U-23 Nationals in Ohio

GENEVA, Ohio — Duke wrestling redshirt junior Kwasi Bonsu turned in a seventh-place finish over the weekend at the U.S. U-23 Freestyle Nationals held at Spire Academy in Geneva. Bonsu collected a 5-2 record over two days of action at 97kg.Â

Duke redshirt sophomore Riley Rowan also competed and tallied a 2-2 record at 61kg.

Bonsu, a native of Baldwin, New York, opened the championship round of 32 with a victory over Ivan Neal, Jr., of MWA. Bonsu was leading the match when Neal was forced to default due to injury. After dropping a Round of 16 bout with a 13-1 tech fall to Thomas Dineen of JWC, Bonsu won his next three matches in the consolation rounds.

In the consolation round of 16, Bonsu totaled an 11-0 tech fall against Reid Hiltunen of BORT and then a 10-0 tech fall win versus Tyler Perry of NCWC. In the consolation quarterfinals, Bonsu posted a 16-4 tech fall win over Mateo Casillas of C4WC. Bonsu dropped a 10-3 decision in the consolation sub-semis to Justin Griffith of DWC. In the seventh-place match, Bonsu posted the win with a 6-6 decision versus Joshua McCutchen of BEWC.Â

A product of Perry, Ohio, Rowan received a bye in the championship round of 128 and then dropped a 12-1 tech fall to Massey Odiotti of BBWC in the round of 64. His next bout was in the consolation sub-round of 32 where Rowan notched an 11-0 tech fall against Andrew Austin of CWC. He knocked off Brady Roark of JWC in a medical forfeit to advance to the consolation sub-round of 16. Rowan then closed action against Joe Fongaro of BORT, falling in a 9-6 decision.
