DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devils' offense sparked a 10-run rally over the final three frames, but the comeback came up just short in the end, falling to No. 9 Florida State, 12-11, at Duke Softball Stadium Saturday afternoon.
No. 19 Duke moves to 21-11 overall with a 4-4 mark in conference play while Florida State improves to 28-5 on the year and 5-0 in ACC action.
Freshman
Brooklinn Thomas was a perfect 4-for-4 during the contest with two RBIs and two runs scored. Junior
D'Auna Jennings went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Classmate
Aminah Vega and sophomore
Amiah Burgess also contributed to the offense, combining to drive in six of Duke's 11 runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless opening frame, Florida State used an RBI-double and RBI-single to plate the first two runs of the game in the top of the second.
- The Blue Devils responded in the bottom half after redshirt sophomore Kairi Rodriguez drew a two-out walk and came home two batters later on an RBI-single from Thomas.
- The Seminoles' offense exploded in the top of the third, scoring six runs off six hits and a pair of Blue Devil errors, to push ahead 8-1.
- Florida State's Michaela Edenfield created a 10-run gap in the fourth with a three-run home run over the right-center field wall for an 11-1 Seminole lead.
- Vega sparked the late rally with a three-run blast in the bottom of the fifth, bringing in Jennings and Thomas, to make it an 11-4 ballgame.
- Jennings cut the deficit to 11-6 with a two-out, two-RBI single in the sixth inning. Her knock scored Rodriguez and Thomas, who both reached on singles before moving up on a wild pitch.
- The Seminoles connected an infield single and double to the left-center field wall to push one additional run across the plate in the top of the seventh.
- Duke battled back in the bottom of the seventh with a five-run frame, highlighted by Burgess's two-run shot to right field. The Blue Devils fought until the very end, loading the bases with two outs but the Seminoles were able to grab the final out and leave the game-tying and game-winning runs stranded.
