RICHMOND, Va. – Cole Krauss scooped up a ground ball off the faceoff and flipped it to
Aidan Maguire who raced down the field to score a goal and lift the sixth-ranked Blue Devils over No. 14 Richmond, 13-12, in double overtime men's lacrosse action at Robins Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Maguire scored 15 seconds into the second overtime, giving Duke (8-1) its second win this season in extra sessions.
Luke Engelke won the faceoff with Krauss scrapping for the ground ball – his third of the afternoon.
Graham Blake led all Duke goal scorers with four tallies while
Max Sloat had three goals and two assists for five points.
Eric Malever registered a goal and three assists. In goal,
Patrick Jameison matched his career high with 14 saves.
How it Happened
- The Blue Devils and Spiders traded goals throughout the opening 15 minutes, heading into the first break knotted at four apiece. Benn Johnston opened the scoring as Duke scored three times in a span of 1:11 to take a 3-1 lead after just 2:37.
- Richmond (5-3), finding success at the faceoff dot, responded with three unanswered by three different players and a 4-3 lead.
- Sloat tied the game with two minutes remaining, running past his defender and firing a left-handed shot past the Richmond goalie.
- Duke capitalized on a couple of extra-man goals from Blake in the second quarter for a 6-4 advantage at the 8:36 mark of the period.
- The Blue Devils locked down on defense in the second quarter, holding Richmond scoreless and to just three shots on goal.
- Richmond ended its scoring drought at 10:47 of the third quarter, making it a one-goal game. The Spiders tied the game 45 seconds later with a Joe Sheridan tally.
- The Blue Devils answered right back with three straight for a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Jack Pappendick stopped Duke's scoreless stretch at 15:53 with a quick stick on a pass from Malever. Blake notched his fourth of the day on another feed from Malever while Benn Johnston capped the 3-0 run to end the quarter.
- Sloat tacked on a fourth goal in the spurt to start the fourth quarter before Richmond responded with three goals in a span of 1:21 to make it a one-goal game, 10-9, with 10:12 left. Lucas Littlejohn beat Duke goalie Patrick Jameison out of the timeout, tying the game for fourth time of the afternoon.
- Malever continued to find the open man for the Blue Devils, feeding Pappendick on the crease to put the Blue Devils back in front, 11-10. The back-and-forth continued with Richmond jumping back in front, 12-11, with two unanswered.
- Duke forced a turnover on the ensuing possession, cleared and called a timeout. Sloat stepped up coming out of the huddle, firing a lefty stinger to the right corner with 1:04 remaining.
- Richmond won the next faceoff, but Duke's defense stood tall with Jameison making a save in the final seconds to force overtime.
- Both teams fired three shots in the first overtime as Jameison and Richmond's Zach Vigue came up with crucial stops. Jameison made his 14th save of the afternoon with two ticks left, setting up Maguire's overtime heroics. Vigue had eight saves for the Spiders in the game.
- Richmond outshot the Blue Devils, 43-32, and won the ground ball battle, 29-24. The Spiders were excellent on the faceoff, winning 19-of-27, while Duke's defense forced Richmond into 15 turnovers. Sheridan and Littlejohn both paced Richmond with three goals and an assist.
Team Notes
- Duke moves to 2-0 in overtime games this season, 19-7 under John Danowski and 33-23-1 in program history. The Blue Devils are 96-77 in one-goal games in school history.
- The double overtime game is the first for Duke since the 2019 NCAA Semifinal loss to Virginia. It is the first double overtime victory by the Blue Devils since a 12-11 win over Loyola in the 2013 NCAA First Round. Duke is 6-6 all-time in double overtime contests.
- The Blue Devils improve to 9-1 against Richmond, winning each of the past nine games.
- Duke held Richmond scoreless in the second quarter, just the second time this season the Blue Devils have held an opponent without a goal in a period. The scoreless drought of 24:38 is the second longest by a Duke opponent this season.
- The win is the third over a top 20 opponent this season and pushes Duke to 139-62 against ranked foes under head coach John Danowski.
- The Blue Devils went 2-of-2 on extra man, marking the seventh game this season Duke has scored multiple man-up goals.
Individual Notes
- Patrick Jameison matched his career high with 14 saves. It is his fourth double-digit save performance of the season and the 16th of his career.
- Graham Blake notched his first hat trick as a Blue Devil, finishing his afternoon with four goals.
- Eric Malever dished three assists, marking his fifth game this season and the 11th of his career with at least three assists.
- Charlie Johnson forced three turnovers to post his third game with at least three caused turnovers.
- Since moving down to attack against Air Force Max Sloat has scored nine goals and four assists for 13 points. In his six games as a midfielder, Sloat was an outstanding facilitator with five goals and nine assists for 14 points.
