DURHAM, N.C.—Duke junior
Max Sloat scored a career-high five goals and six points overall to lead the sixth-ranked Blue Devils to a 16-10 victory over Providence in midweek men's lacrosse action at Koskinen Stadium Wednesday night.
Sloat paced a balanced offensive showing by Duke (7-1) with a first-half hat trick and five goals overall while
Luke Grayum tallied three man-up goals.
Eric Malever had another solid outing with two goals and three assists for five points. Overall, eight different Blue Devils scored a goal, and 11 different players notched at least one point.
The 17:57 scoring drought by Providence spanning the first and second quarters allowed the Blue Devils to build a 7-1 lead early in the second quarter. Duke held the Friars to just 27 shots and forced 19 turnovers, including 11 in the first half.
How it Happened
- Providence got on the board first two minutes into the game. That would be the last time the Friars scored until the 10:04 mark of the second period.
- Andrew McAdorey opened the scoring for the Blue Devils, notching his 100th career goal to spark a 6-0 run over the next 9:18. Four different players scored in the stretch, which included three goals in 2:39.
- Grayum was the beneficiary of a pair of man-up opportunities as he and Malever connected on consecutive markers 58 seconds apart to put Duke up 3-1. Sloat and Malever combined for three goals to send Duke into the first break up 6-1.
- Sloat added another tally to start the second quarter before Ryan Bell ended Providence's scoring drought at 17:57. The Friars scored three of the final four goals of the period to pull within four, 8-4, at the half.
- The Friars took advantage of a Duke penalty in the third quarter, scoring a pair of man-up goals 19 seconds apart to make it an 8-6 game.
- Benn Johnston responded immediately with an assist from McAdorey to jumpstart a 4-0 run and put the game out of reach at 12-6 with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter. Liam McLane and Graham Blake got in the scoring column during the spurt.
- Duke won the fourth quarter 4-3, including a third man-up goal from Grayum, to post the six-goal victory.
- Defensively, Aidan Maguire once again was excellent with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Cole Krauss had a career night with two caused turnovers and five ground balls while Keith Boyer had two and three, respectively.
- Luke Engelke and Ben McCarthy shared the majority of faceoff duties, winning 9-of-13 and 7-of-12, respectively. Engelke also had six ground balls and an assist.
- In goal, Patrick Jameison had nine saves in 56 minutes of action.
- Providence was led by Jack Horrigan's four goals and five points while Dan Donohue had 12 saves in goal.
Team Notes
- Duke finishes its six-game homestand with a 5-1 record. The Blue Devils are 6-1 at home this season with two regular-season home games remaining.
- The 27 shots by Providence are the second fewest by a Duke opponent this season. The Blue Devils held the Friars to 74 percent clearing, marking the third time this season Duke has held an opponent below 80 percent on the clear.
Player Notes
- Andrew McAdorey became the 24th Blue Devil to score 100 career goals. His two points on the evening give him 160 for his career, ranking 30th in school history.
- Max Sloat recorded a career-high five goals and six points. It is just his second career hat trick and the first this season, while the six points are two more than his previous career mark. The California native has at least one assist in every game this season.
- Luke Grayum notched his fifth hat trick of the season and the 15th of his career. His three man-up goals tie him with Eric Malever with five on the year.
- Eric Malever, with two goals and three assists, registered his fourth five-point outing of the season and the ninth of his career.
- Aidan Maguire had a career-high four caused turnovers and four ground balls. He has 19 takeaways this season, leaving him three shy of tying five other Blue Devils for 10th on the Duke single-season chart. He has 44 for his career – 10th in Duke history and 12 away from tying for eighth. He is the first shortstick midfielder to rank in the top 10 in Duke history.
- Luke Grayum inched his way closer to 100 career goals. His hat trick gives him 92 goals and 130 points for his career.
