DURHAM – Duke (12-6) scored five runs across the third and fourth innings while stranding 10 George Mason Patriots (11-6) on base to sweep the double midweek on Wednesday, 6-3.
Graduate
Gavin Brown made his first start at Duke, working 1.2 innings and allowing one hit. He struck out one Patriot and did not factor into the decision. Junior
Edward Hart earned the win in relief, getting the final two outs of the inning to improve to 1-0.
Duke opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, as
Ben Miller notched his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field.
Andrew Yu added to the tally, beating out an infield single to score
Ben Rounds from third, 2-0.
The Patriots responded in the top of the fourth inning, tying the ballgame, before Miller delivered again in the bottom of the fourth. He sliced a single to left field and advanced to second on the throw, to score
Kyle Johnson from second.
Tyler Albright smashed his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to extend his hitting streak to four games.
Graduate
Reid Easterly came on for the final four outs of the ballgame, not allowing a hit and striking out one batter. He closed the ballgame for the Blue Devils, earning his second save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, as Ben Miller hit a solo home to right field. Andrew Yu beat out an infield single to score Ben Rounds from third, 2-0.
- George Mason tied the ballgame in the top of the fourth inning, 2-2.
- Miller delivered again in the bottom of the fourth inning, singling to left field and advancing to second on the attempt to throw out Kyle Johnson at the plate. Tyler Albright hit a two-run home run to left center field, 5-2.
- The Patriots cut into the lead in the top of the eighth inning, 5-3.
- Ben Rounds added to the Duke lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, hitting a solo home run to center field, 6-3.
NOTES
- The Blue Devils improved to 205-66 (.756) when scoring first and 225-49 (.821) scoring three-plus runs in an inning since 2016.
- Graduate Ben Miller tallied his seventh multi-hit contest of the season on Wednesday, finishing the afternoon 2-for-4. Miller drew a walk and hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field.
- Junior Tyler Albright extended his hitting streak to four games, hitting a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Albright is now tied with Miller for the most multi-hit games this season (7).
- Senior Wallace Clark had his hitting streak snapped on Wednesday, but he continued his reached base safely streak to 18 games. Clark was hit by a pitch, moving him into eighth all-time in Duke history in that category. Clark has been hit by 33 pitches in his two seasons in Durham.
- Junior Edward Hart improved to 1-0 on the season, working 0.2 innings and striking out one batter. He got the Blue Devils off the field in a tie ballgame before the offense gave him the lead.
- Graduate Reid Easterly worked the final 1.1 innings on the mound, not allowing a hit and striking out one batter. He picked up his second save of the season.
- Duke drew 10 walks on Wednesday afternoon, pushing their season tally to 132 through 18 games.
- Graduate Ben Rounds tallied his second home run of the season, finishing the day 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks. Rounds lifted a solo home run to center field in the eighth inning to extend Duke's lead.
