JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Five different Blue Devils recorded multiple goals to lead seventh-ranked Duke to a hard-fought 14-8 victory at Jacksonville in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The game featured five ties and four lead changes in the first half.
Luke Grayum led all scorers with three goals and an assist while
Jack Pappendick registered his first career hat trick.
Eric Malever,
Liam Kershis and
Andrew McAdorey both added two markers. On the defensive end, Duke held Jacksonville without a goal for 23:17 in the second half, allowing the offense to put the game out of reach.
Charlie Johnson finished his afternoon with a career-high five caused turnovers.
How it Happened
- Malever opened the scoring for the Blue Devils on a through pass from Benn Johnston right on the doorstep for his fifth of the season.
- Jacksonville responded with two unanswered to take a 2-1 lead after four minutes of action.
- The back and forth continued for the rest of the quarter as the Blue Devils got unassisted goals from Liam Kershis and Malever to go back in front 3-2. Buoyed by a good ride, the Dolphins kept Duke off the scoreboard and tied it 3-3. The teams traded goals in the final two minutes to head into the first-quarter break tied, 4-4.
- The seesaw battle continued with Jacksonville jumping back ahead, 5-4, on a man-up score. Duke killed the remaining 1:20 in the two-minute penalty and evened the score again, 5-5, with a Chris Cusolito marker to spark a 3-0 run by the Blue Devils. Jack Pappendick gave the Blue Devils the advantage once again, rifling home a Cusolito pass from the right hash while Kershis fired home his second of the day 16 seconds later to make it 7-5.
- Luke Grayum capped the first-half scoring for the Blue Devils, sending Duke into ahead, 8-6.
- Grayum added another goal to his stat line three minutes into the third quarter to give the Blue Devils their largest lead of the afternoon, 9-6. Duke's offense continued to click, with Andrew McAdorey scoring the final two goals of the quarter for an 11-7 advantage after 45 minutes of action.
- Graham Blake turned the corner early in the fourth quarter, extending Duke's lead to five goals, 12-7. With the Blue Devil defensive unit taking care of business on its end, Duke's offense capitalized with another Grayum tally to put the game out of the Dolphins' reach. Pappendick connected on man-up to round out Duke's scoring in the 14-9 victory.
- Ben McCarthy was outstanding at the faceoff dot, winning 12-of-15 restarts and picking up five ground balls. Aidan Maguire once again was everywhere for the Blue Devils collecting five ground balls, three caused turnovers and an assist.
- Patrick Jameison and Buck Cunningham split duties between the pipes, making two and four saves, respectively. Duke won the ground ball battle 28-25 and forced the Dolphins into 19 turnovers.

- Jack Pappendick recorded his first career hat trick with three goals in the game. He is one of three Blue Devils this season to have at least one hat trick after two games.
- Andrew McAdorey notched two goals, leaving him 11 goals shy of 100 for his career.
- Luke Grayum notched his second straight hat trick and the 12th of his career with three goals.
- Aidan Maguire had a career day with a career-high five ground balls and three caused turnovers. He also recorded his fifth career assist.
- Charlie Johnson, in his second career start, had a career-high five caused turnovers and a ground ball.
- Freshman Ben McCarthy won 12-of-17 faceoffs – a career high in wins and faceoffs attempted.
