DURHAM, N.C.—Duke senior midfielder
Andrew McAdorey scored the game's final three goals to lift the sixth-ranked Blue Devils to a thrilling 8-7 overtime win over No. 19 Michigan in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Koskinen Stadium.
With Duke trailing 7-5 with 4:02 remaining, McAdorey put the team on his back, scoring three unanswered goals in a span of 5:11 to keep the Blue Devils (4-0) undefeated on the season. McAdorey made it 7-6 at the 3:12 mark and tied the score 1:05 later to force overtime. The Long Island native tallied the game winner on Duke's second possession in overtime.
Duke's defense was lights out for the entire 61:59, holding Michigan to just seven goals and forcing 18 turnovers.
Patrick Jameison turned in his best performance of the season with 14 saves on 30 shots faced.
How it Happened
- Both offenses struggled to find a rhythm against terrific defensive units in the first quarter with Michigan taking a 1-0 lead in the first break. The first goal of the game didn't come until seven seconds remaining in the period when Lukas Stanat beat Jameison.
- Duke took just five shots in the first period and turned the ball over six times.
- The Wolverines went up 2-0 early in the second quarter before sophomore Benn Johnston put Duke on the board with a man-up strike. Max Sloat provided the assist.
- After Michigan scored again to make it 3-1, longstick midfielder Mac Christmas netted his fourth goal of the season with 15 seconds remaining in the half. The goal came following a 10th save by Jameison.
- The Blue Devil offense regained its footing in the third quarter, outscoring Michigan, 2-1, to tie the game 4-4 after 45 minutes. Chris Cusolito tied the game for the first time with an unassisted score and Eric Malever connected on man up with 1:47 left to set up the heart-stopping fourth quarter.
- Freshman Ben McCarthy gave Duke its first lead, winning the faceoff and scoring just seven seconds into the fourth stanza.
- Michigan, having gone nearly 10 minutes without scoring, registered three unanswered over a span of 6:45 for a 7-5 lead with four minutes to play.
- The next five minutes was the McAdorey and Duke defense show. Jake Wilson picked up the ground ball on the faceoff after Michigan took a two-goal lead. McAdorey beat his name to the right pipe and beat Taylor Hunter to make it 6-6.
- McCarthy won the ensuing faceoff and like déja vu, McAdorey ran past his defender to the pipe to make it 7-7.
- Michigan won the next battle at the dot, but Jameison denied Stanat for his 14th save of the afternoon. McAdorey had one look at the end of regulation, but sent it wide, setting up the thrilling finish.
- Aidan Mulholland and Stanat had two goals apiece for Michigan. Hunter had 10 saves in goal for the Wolverines.
- McCarthy finished his day 7-of-12 from the dot with five ground balls.

- Andrew McAdorey registered his 13th career hat trick and the second this season. He has 95 goals and 54 assists for 149 points in career. He is five goals shy of becoming the 24th Blue Devil to score 100 goals. His 149 points are tied for 33rd in Duke history.
- Head coach John Danowski captured his 476th career victory and 257th at Duke. He is two wins shy of becoming the second men's coach across all three divisions to have 478 wins.
- Patrick Jameison registered his 14th career double-digit saves performance and the second consecutive. The 14 saves match his career high. He also picked up a career-high six ground balls.
- Mac Christmas recorded his fourth goal of the season and has a goal in three of four games this year.
- Aidan Maguire matched his career high with five ground balls. He also had a caused turnover giving him at least one takeaway in every game.
Team Notes
- Duke improves to 152-27 at home under head coach John Danowski. The Blue Devils have won five straight dating back to last season.
- Duke moves to 139-62 against USILA top 20 opponents under John Danowski.
- The Blue Devils are now 95-76 in games decided by one goal in program history and 36-22 since 2007. Duke is 32-23-1 all-time in overtime and 18-7 under Danowski.
- Duke moved to 174-9 when holding teams to under 10 goals and improved to 17-40 when being held to single-digit scoring. The Blue Devils' last victory when scoring fewer than 10 goals was an 8-2 victory over Notre Dame, April 7, 2018.
- Duke failed to score in the first quarter for the first time since March 19, 2022 against Towson. The Blue Devils trailed 2-0 after the first quarter.
- Duke held Michigan to just eight shots in the second half, including just two in the third quarter – the fewest allowed by Duke in a half this season.
