DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team heads to the Golden State for a pair of matches against California and fifth-ranked Stanford Nov. 7 and 8, respectively. Both contests are set for 10 p.m. (EST), and will stream on ACC Network Extra.
Last Time Out
The Blue Devils dropped both of their matches last weekend in straight sets, first falling to No. 4 Pittsburgh, 3-0, before closing the weekend with a 3-0 loss to No. 7 SMU.
Fourth-ranked Pittsburgh defeated Duke, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-13), Friday inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. Sophomore Taylor Williams led the Blue Devils' offense with 10 kills, while freshman Charlotte Glass dished out a team-best 21 assists. Williams also paced the back row with 11 digs and sophomore Avery Hamlin added three blocks.
Duke fought hard in three sets but ultimately fell short against No. 7 SMU, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19), Sunday inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. Offensively, freshman Ashby Zubchevich led Duke with 12 kills on 32 swings for a .156 hitting percentage. Glass directed the offense with 27 assists, while redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh anchored the blocking effort with 1.5 total blocks. Sophomore Mailinh Godschall surpassed 800 career digs, leading Duke's defense with 11 on the day.
Offensive Threats
The Blue Devils have tallied a total of 1,015 kills this season and rank No. 12 in the ACC in average kills per set (12.38). The offense is led by Zubchevich with 242 kills and Williams follows with 241.
Zubchevich has been dominant on offense for Duke, recording double-digit kills in 11 matches this season. She turned in her best offensive stretch of her career, tallying 42 kills during the conference-opening weekend. Her last double-digit outing came against seventh-ranked SMU, when she logged 12 kills on 32 attempts to hit at a .156 clip.
Williams is having a breakout sophomore campaign. A season ago she totaled 208 terminations, a mark she has surpassed with 241 terminations this year. She boasts a .180 attack percentage and has notched double-digit kills in 13 matches this season. She tallied a career-best 18 kills to help surge the offense to a 3-1 triumph over Bryant in Duke's season opening match. Last weekend, she garnered a double-double against No. 4 Pitt, posting 10 kills along with 11 digs.
Defensive Efforts
Duke comes in at fourth in the ACC, earning 1,188 total digs, averaging 14.49 digs per set.
Godschall, who ranks first in the conference with 4.26 digs per set, leads the Blue Devils and the ACC with 349 total marks on the season. She has tallied 20 or more digs in six matches this season — Bryant, Houston, Texas Tech, Mississippi State, Appalachian State and Wake Forest. She almost touched that mark last against Boston College, earning 19 gets. Godschall also ranks No. 75 nationally with her 4.26 gets per set this season.
Duke has totaled 160.0 total blocks, including 29 solo blocks and 262 block assists, and posts an average of 1.95 blocks per set. Iloh leads Duke with 73.0 total blocks, marking the most she's posted in a season during her collegiate career. She has five or more blocks in five matches this season and posted a career-best eight blocks in the Blue Devils' second match up against the Tar Heels this season. Last time out, she combined for five total blocks, posting two against No. 4 Pitt and closing the weekend with three against seventh-ranked SMU.
A Closer Look at the Series Versus California
Duke trails in the all-time series against California, 1-2. A season ago, the Golden Bears earned a 3-1 victory over Duke inside Cameron Indoor Stadium in the teams' first conference meeting. The series dates back to the 1985 season, when Duke posted a 3-1 win in Berkeley, California.
A Closer Look at the Series Versus Stanford
Stanford owns a 7-0 lead in the all-time series against Duke, including a 1-0 advantage in conference matchups. In the contest last season, the Cardinal defeated Duke, 3-0, inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. The series began in 1992, when the Blue Devils were swept by the Cardinal.
