The November road warriors continue the five-game road swing in the Players Era Women's Championship in Las Vegas. The Blue Devils cap the two-day tournament against No. 3 UCLA Nov. 27 at 10:30 p.m., (ET), on truTV.
Duke is 3-4 overall and coming off a hard-fought 83-66 loss to No. 2 South Carolina. The Blue Devils are led on offense by sophomore Toby Fournier's 15.6 points per game. Ashlon Jackson and Taina Mair round out the double-digit scorers, dropping in 11.6 and 11.3 points per game, respectively. Fournier and Arianna Roberson lead the charge on the glass, averaging 6.2 and 6.0 rebounds per game, respectively. They are the top rim protectors with 2.6 and 1.8 blocks per game, respectively. Mair is the floor general, dishing 5.1 assists to 2.0 turnovers per game.
The Bruins are 6-1 and averaging 80.3 points per game and shooting an impressive 49.5 percent from the field. UCLA suffered its first loss Wednesday in a 76-65 setback to No. 4 Texas. Trailing by 20 at halftime, the Bruins rallied to make it a four-point game before the Longhorns pulled away down the stretch. UCLA committed 20 turnovers in the loss.
Duke looks to rebound following the loss to South Carolina. The Blue Devils scored 66 points - the most the Gamecocks have allowed all season, but 16 turnovers and a -8 rebound margin were too much to overcome. The Blue Devils grabbed 35 rebounds in the game – the most by a South Carolina opponent this season, while their 39-percent shooting marked the highest shooting percentage by a Gamecocks foe this season.
Taina Mair is having a fantastic start to her senior season, averaging 11.3 points, 5.1 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 2.4 steals while committing just 14 turnovers. She recently joined elite company at Duke by eclipsing the 1,000 points and 500 assists benchmarks. She has double digits in four games this season and at least four assists in five outings.
After Seven Games
Duke is 3-4 overall and 0-3 in neutral site games. Sophomore Toby Fournier headlines the offense, averaging 15.6 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game. She has registered double digits in six of her seven games. Ashlon Jackson is chipping in 11.6 points per game and Taina Mair 11.3. Arianna Roberson, after her first four collegiate games, is averaging 8.8 and 6.2 points per game. Mair is the quarterback to the offense, adding 5.1 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game and a team-best 17 steals. Delaney Thomas has been a consistent presence, shooting at least 50 percent in all six games. She also grabs 5.6 rebounds per game and helps lead Duke's vaunted defense with 16 steals.
Duke is shooting 41 percent from the field and holding opponents to 36.3 percent shooting overall and 25 percent from behind the arc.
About UCLA/Series History
Duke and UCLA meet for just the fourth time since the inaugural matchup in 1997. The Blue Devils are 2-1 against the Bruins and last met in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2000 - an 80-52 win for the Blue Devils.
UCLA enters the game 6-1 overall, ranked third nationally and coming off a loss to No. 4 Texas in the opening game of the Players Era Women's Championship. Like South Carolina, UCLA is an elite rebounding team, ranking seventh nationally with a 16.4 rebounding margin. The Bruins average 80 points per game and shoot just under 50 percent from the floor.
Offensively, Kiki Rice and Lauren Betts are the top scorers at 14.4 and 14.1 points per game, respectively. Gianna Kneepkens is the shooter from distance, knocking down 39 percent of her attempts from long range. Betts is the top rebounder at 7.4 boards per game. The trio of Rice, Betts and Kneepkens share the ball equally, averaging 3.5 assists per game.
