Blue Devils Make Short Trip to Raleigh to Face No. 5 NC State Friday

SETTING THE SCENE
• The Duke wrestling team returns to dual match action Friday, Jan. 10 as the Blue Devils open ACC action on the road at fifth-ranked NC State (6-0). The match will be contested at 5 p.m., inside James T. Valvano Arena at William Neal Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.

• Duke is riding a three-match winning streak with victories against Presbyterian (38-9), Davidson (22-21) and VMI (22-12).

• Following the NC State contest, the Blue Devils will return home to host Gardner-Webb (Jan. 14) and North Carolina (Jan. 17).

THE SERIES
• Duke and NC State will face each other for the 91st time with the Wolfpack holding a 68-21 advantage in the series. In matches played in Raleigh, N.C., the Blue Devils hold a 9-31 ledger and have dropped four in a row.

• Duke head coach Glen Lanham is 2-11 against the Wolfpack since taking over at Duke.

NOTING THE BLUE DEVILS
• Redshirt sophomore Connor Barket featured a 13-match winning streak, which ended during the Southern Scuffle. It marked the longest streak of his short collegiate career. The streak was the longest since the 2022-23 season when Jonah Niesenbaum totaled a 15-match streak.

• Connor Barket is currently ranked No. 30 by Intermat, No. 24 by WrestleStat and No. 30 by FloWrestling. Duke's Aidan Wallace is also ranked No. 31 by WrestleStat, No. 29 by Intermat and No. 32 by FloWrestling.

Wallace owns a team-high two wins against ranked opponents, which both came at the Southern Scuffle.

• A total of three Blue Devils currently feature double-digit victories on the season -- Connor Barket (19), Aidan Wallace (20) and Vincent Lee (10). Lee has been sidelined with a back injury recently and has not competed.

• With his seventh-place finish at the Southern Scuffle, Connor Barket now owns back-to-back podium placements at the event as he placed seventh in 2024.

• In the last dual match against VMI, freshman Riley Rowan picked up his first collegiate victory as he totaled a 10-4 decision against Cody Tanner. Rowan comes from a family of wrestlers as his father, David, wrestled at Edinboro and his brother, Kyle, wrestled at Stanford.

• After dealing with a knee injury for the first month, redshirt sophomore Gaetano Console picked up his first dual match win of the season with a 14-4 major decision victory against Marc Koch of Davidson. He now owns 10 dual match wins over his career.

• Redshirt freshman Aidan Wallace owns a team-best 20 wins on the season and holds a 20-5 ledger heading into the NC State contest. He is coming off posting a 5-1 record at the Southern Scuffle and placed second overall. Wallace has won 13 out of his last 15 matches.

• Sophomore Raymond Adams has won two out of his last three dual matches with victories against Presbyterian and Davidson at the 133 pounds.

• Duke features a three-match winning streak, which is tied for the longest winning streak since the 2014-15 campaign. The Blue Devils have totaled five three-match win streaks since the 2014-15 season. It marks the longest streak since 2014-15 when Duke won five in a row.

• If Connor Barket nets a win at NC State on Friday, Duke will feature two 20-win wrestlers as Aidan Wallace already owns 20 victories. The last time the Blue Devils featured two 20-win wrestlers was in 2021-22 with Matt (29) and Josh (28) Finesilver.

LAST TIME OUT
• Duke redshirt freshman Aidan Wallace turned in a second-place finish to close action at the Southern Scuffle, which was held at UT-Chattanooga in Chattanooga, Tenn.

For the weekend in the 165-pound weight class, Wallace posted a 5-1 ledger along with his first two ranked wins of his career and two seeded victories. He became the first Duke finalist at the event since Josh Finesilver in 2022.

On Sunday, Wallace opened action in the semifinals with a 10-6 decision against 32nd-ranked Tate Picklo of Oklahoma. In the finals, Wallace dropped an 18-3 tech fall to 13th-ranked Gunner Filipowicz of Army.

Redshirt sophomore Connor Barket turned in a seventh-place ledger on the weekend with a 4-2 record in the heavyweight bracket. Barket posted a fall at the 5:39 mark against Virginia's Gabe Christenson and then dropped a 14-4 major decision against Hunter Catka of Virginia Tech. In the seventh-place match, Barket posted a 10-2 major decision against Daulton Mayer of Bellarmine to close action.

HOT STARTS
• After failing to win a match as a rookie last year, Peter Chacon has totaled a 7-8 ledger to open the season, including four straight wins at the Journeyman Classic in Bethlehem, Pa.
• Coming off a freshman season with a 1-3 ledger a season ago, redshirt freshman Aidan Wallace has opened the year with a team-best 20 wins. He is 9-1 in dual match play at 165.
• Freshman Vincent Lee has featured a solid start to his collegiate career by totaling 10 wins at 197. He has won six out of his last eight contests.
• Riding the momentum of totaling a team-high 16 wins this past season, redshirt sophomore Connor Barket has opened the 2024-25 campaign with a 19-4 ledger, which included 13 consecutive wins at one point.
