DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke women's lacrosse team will start the 2025 season in the top 25, earning the No. 25 spot in the Preseason Kane Footwear Division I Media Poll as announced by Inside Lacrosse. The Blue Devils open their season Feb. 7 against Elon.
Duke is one of eight ACC programs in the top 25 with Boston College (1), North Carolina (4) and Syracuse (5) landing spots in the top five. Overall, the Blue Devils have seven contests against ranked opponents, including home contests versus Notre Dame (13) and the Tar Heels.
The Blue Devils, while looking to replace three of their top four scorers on offense, return a wealth of experience and talent on defense. A preseason All-America honorable mention pick, senior
Reilly Traynor will anchor the defensive unit. She had 18 caused turnovers last season. She'll be buoyed by junior
Madison Beale,
Sydney Smith with Columbia graduate student transfer Adèle Swanson adding depth to the position. Duke sports six goalies on the roster, including returning starter
Kennedy Everson and Harvard starting backstop
Chloe Provenzano.
Offensively, the Blue Devils' top returning scorer is senior
Carly Bernstein who was second on the team last year with 18 goals and 28 assists for 46 points.
Mattie Shearer contributed 26 points from the midfield while
Bella Goodwin looks to have a breakout junior campaign following an 18-point sophomore season. The Blue Devils also will look to Harvard transfer
Callie Hem to lead the attack unit. Hem, an All-Ivy League pick in 2024, scored 67 points a season ago for the Crimson.
Kerry Nease handled the majority of draw control duties last year, winning 88.
The Blue Devils open the season with a weekend set, Feb. 7 and 9. Duke hosts Elon Feb. 7 at 3 p.m., and welcomes High Point, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. Duke hits the road for two weekends before returning home again for another pair of weekend matchups, including the ACC opener against Notre Dame.
Welcoming California and Stanford to the ACC this season, the ACC Tournament will feature all 12 teams with the top eight earning a bye into the quarterfinals. The remaining four teams will play opening round games on campus.
