DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team was swept by Michigan, 3-0 (17-25, 10-25, 25-27), Saturday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the setback, the Blue Devils fall to 4-7 this fall with their fourth-straight loss. Michigan improves to 10-1. This marks the conclusion of the non-conference slate.
Offensively, Duke was led by
Kerry Keefe and
Rachel Richardson with six kills each, while
Rylie Kadel hit .667 percent. Setters
Grace Penn and
Nikki Quinn dished nine and 14, respectively, while libero
Mailinh Godschall added eight digs. Freshman
Breonna Goss and
Ngozi Iloh led the blocking unit with four each.
Michigan was led by Allison Jacobs with 13 kills and 10 digs while Valentina Vaulet added 11 kills to hit .647 percent.
How It Happened
- Michigan opened the contest hitting .357 percent and limited Duke to a .143 clip. Richardson led the team with four kills and no errors, but Duke's defense couldn't find an answer with just three digs.
- The Wolverines hit an impressive .643 percent in the second set with 20 kills and just two errors on 28 swings to take a 2-0 lead in the match score. The Blue Devils tallied just five kills and four digs in the second set.
- Both teams struggled offensively in the third frame, but Duke's block finally started to come alive. Kadel led the way with one solo and two assisted, while Goss and Iloh tallied two each.
- Michigan led 10-3, before Duke went on an impressive 10-1 run to eventually gain its first lead of the game. Goss tallied her third kill of the day to bring up set point (24-22), but Michigan would not go away. Both teams made fantastic defensive efforts, but ultimately, Michigan won five of the last six points to win the set, 27-25.
Notables
- Duke has lost four straight for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
- Duke's 26 kills ties for the fewest this season – the other time was against No. 3 Penn State.
- With her four blocks tonight, Goss now owns 28.0 for the season to rank her second on the team as a rookie.
- With Kadel's .667 hitting percentage, she is hitting .418 percent during her senior year. That ranks 26th nationally as of Sept. 20.
