DURHAM, N.C. – Three Blue Devils tallied double-digit kills as Duke came up short, 3-1 (18-25, 28-26, 18-25, 21-25), to South Carolina Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the loss, the Blue Devils drop to 1-2 to open the 2024 campaign.
Duke was led by
Kerry Keefe's double-double with 18 kills and 11 digs, while
Rylie Kadel and
Ngozi Iloh added 15 and 13, respectively. Setter
Grace Penn recorded a career-high 48 dimes while libero
Mailinh Godschall was one of four Blue Devils with double-digit digs, leading the way with 18.
Lauren Ingram and Kadel paced the blocking unit with three blocks each.
South Carolina's Riley Whitesides knocked down 23 kills as the Gamecocks hit .236 percent for the match. The Blue Devils were limited to a .190 clip.
How It Happened
- South Carolina got off to a quick start, leading 15-8 at the first set media timeout. South Carolina's Riley Whitesides paced the Gamecocks with a .667 hitting percentage to lead all hitters with four kills. Duke bounced back with a 5-1 run, forcing South Carolina to take its first timeout of the set, 13-16.
- South Carolina extended its lead to four (22-17) as Duke burned both of its timeouts. Following the break, the Gamecocks went on a 3-1 run to take the opening set, 25-18.
- Keefe hit .462 percent in the first set with six kills, but Duke couldn't find an answer for South Carolina's .351 percentage.
- Duke responded well to take the second set and evened the match, 1-1, as Iloh, Kadel and Keefe combined for 18 kills.
- Both squads struggled to settle in offensively in the third set as Duke played to just a .045 hitting percentage. Kadel tallied two blocks in an attempt to slow down the Gamecocks, but fell behind in the set score, 2-1.
- South Carolina posted a .216 hitting percentage and limited Duke to a .167 clip to win the match in the fourth frame.

- Kadel is hitting .529 percent with 42 kills and just six errors through three games.
- Duke featured three players with double-digit kills for the second game this season.
