DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke baseball outfielder
Griffin Conine was elevated to the Miami Marlins on Sunday. Conine becomes the 48th Duke player to make his MLB debut in program history and third this season.
The Weston, Florida, native was selected in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and was acquired by the Marlins during the 2020 season, in a trade sending Jonathan Villar to Toronto. In his three years at Duke, Conine posted a .280 average at the plate, starting 155 of the 156 games he appeared in.
The second-team All-ACC selection and first Blue Devil to record double-digit home runs in back-to-back seasons since former Oakland Athletic
Nate Freiman, Conine scored 115 career runs, tallied 145 career hits, 29 doubles, four triples, 108 RBI, and 31 home runs. His home run tally is the seventh most home runs in program history.
Conine is the son of former Florida Marlin Jeff Conine, who was a two-time MLB all-star and played 17 seasons with six teams (Kansas City Royals, Florida Marlins, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets), winning two World Series titles with the Marlins in 1997 and 2003.
The Marlins are back in action against the Colorado Rockies on Monday at 7:40 CT / 8:40 ET at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado.
