AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Duke women's golf duo of
Phoebe Brinker and
Emma McMyler are prepped and ready for the 2024 Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA), which commences April 3-6 in Augusta, Ga.
An international field of 72 women amateurs will compete over 54 holes of stroke play. A cut will take place after 36 holes, advancing the leading 30 players to the final round at Augusta National Golf Club. In the event of a tie after 54 holes, the winner will be decided by sudden-death playoff.
The first 36 holes will be contested over two days on the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., April 3-4. The entire field will then play Augusta National for an official practice round Friday, April 5. The final round will take place at Augusta National on Saturday, April 6 and will feature the top 30 competitors who made the cut.
Brinker will open action Wednesday at 8:58 a.m., while McMyler tees off at 9:32 a.m. Both golfers tee off hole No. 10.
"A lot of the hard work has gone into receiving the invitation, so to get to play in this event is really rewarding," said McMyler. "This is what you practice for, what you work for, to compete and play against the best players in the world. So, I'm ready to kind of get the week started."
Seeing action in the ANWA for a third time, Brinker looks to make her first cut in the event, after seeing action in 2022 and 2023. McMyler will make her debut in the event. In the latest Women's Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), Brinker is No. 91 and McMyler is No. 73.
"Yeah, certain things about this golf course, like there are certain spots you just don't want to be," commented Brinker about playing in the event for a third time. "It was a good refresher for me as well helping her [Emma] out. And then just for this week, I'm going to really try to enjoy it, because it's definitely my last one. Just going to soak it all in and have as much fun as I can."
In 2019, Duke featured five golfers in the inaugural ANWA competition –
Erica Shepherd,
Virginia Elena Carta,
Gina Kim,
Jaravee Boonchant and
Ana Belac. The Blue Devils then had three golfers in the 2021 ANWA competition with Boonchant, Kim and Shepherd followed by Brinker and Shepherd in 2022 and Brinker, Shepherd and
Anne Chen in 2023.
Over the five years of action, Duke will now have 15 spots taken up by Blue Devils that will compete with the other top amateur golfers in the country.
