CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 25 Duke women's lacrosse dropped a 16-11 decision at No. 15 North Carolina Thursday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
With the setback, the Blue Devils move to 10-7 overall and 4-5 in conference play as the Tar Heels elevate to 10-5 (6-3 ACC). Three Tar Heels registered hat tricks and were led by Caroline Godine with six points.
Offensively, Duke was led by Carly Bernstein with four goals while Lexi Schmalz and Maddie McCorkle added two points each. Kennedy Everson got the start in cage and made five saves while McCorkle paced the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Katie DeSimone, the ACC's leading scorer, was sidelined due to injury, the first game she's missed in her four-year Duke career.
How it Happened
- Eva Pronti opened the scoring with a nice opportunity on the eight meter before North Carolina tallied two unassisted scores. Bernstein finished with a nice pass from Bella Goodwin to even the score (2-2) before the two squads traded the next four goals.
- North Carolina went on a four-goal streak to lead 6-3 at the end of the first.
- The Blue Devils outscored the Tar Heels 4-2 in the second frame as Bernstein (2), Carner and Schmalz added in on the scoring. Duke made it a one possession game (7-6) as it connected on consecutive opportunities on the eight meter.
- Duke trailed by one (8-7) at the half as Bernstein led all scorers with three goals while McCorkle dished two dimes.
- North Carolina came out shooting in the third quarter with six goals on 11 shots, seven of which were on cage, to open up a 14-9 lead after 45 minutes.
- Both teams added two goals in the final frame with the third-quarter scoring proved to be the difference maker.
Notables
- North Carolina has won 15 consecutive and and 23 of the last 26 meetings.
- Duke is now 9-3 when scoring at least 10 goals — the other setbacks are No. 13 Johns Hopkins and No. 19 Clemson.
- Duke scored six of its 11 goals on free-position attempts.
- Bernstein notched her sixth game this year with four-or-more points and the ninth time in her career.
- Both teams cleared the ball well as Duke finished 17-of-19. North Carolina edged Duke on draw controls, 16-15, as Duke committed 17 turnovers to North Carolina's 13.
Looking Ahead
- Duke is the sixth seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament and will face third seeded Boston College (13-3, 7-2) Wednesday evening at 8 p.m., in Charlotte.
