COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Duke rowing team concluded action at the ACC/Big Ten Double Dual on Saturday at the Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio.
The Blue Devils' Second Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight highlighted the day, sweeping their races against No. 9 Michigan and No. 12 Ohio State during the two sessions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Third Varsity Eight opened the morning session in strong fashion, gliding to a time of 6:55.1, nearly 16 seconds ahead of the Buckeyes.
- After the rain delay, the Second Varsity Four followed suit with another first-place finish after clocking a time of 7:47.1.
- Duke's Varsity Four crossed the finish line just 3.1 seconds behind Ohio State before bouncing back in the second session to defeat Michigan with a top time of 7:51.5.
- The Blue Devils battled strong headwinds in the afternoon against No. 9 Michigan but still collected wins in three of their five races.
- The 3V8 and 2V8 earned their second wins of the day after racing past the Wolverines to first-place times of 7:20. 2 and 6:54.2, respectively.
- Duke's Varsity Eight closed out both sessions with a pair of second-place times, clocking a time of 7:08.3 against the Buckeyes before improving their time to 6:50.4 in the afternoon session against the Wolverines.
QUOTES
"Every boat had some really great moments today. Obviously, two big wins in the 2V8, that really shows our depth and how strong of a team we are. Michigan and Ohio State are both really strong in the team events, so that was great to see. We had some very dominating performances in the 3V8 races, which was exciting. We handled the conditions really well, with the rain delay and it being really, really cold, we were still able to rise above that and perform well. We also faced strong headwinds in the afternoon and still raced hard. This doesn't define our season but it surely puts us on the right path. This weekend proves we can hang with some really strong teams, but we still have a lot of work to do." – Head coach
