SARASOTA, Fla. – The 14th-ranked Duke rowing team faced strong competition on the opening day of the Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Fla., on Friday.
The Blue Devils' Third Varsity Eight highlighted the day after opening the afternoon session with a first-place finish over three nationally ranked crews. Duke stroked its way to second-place times in its remaining four races of the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Second Varsity Four opened the action for the Blue Devils with a second-place finish over four nationally ranked teams. The 2V4 clocked a time of 7:17.466, just 3.4 seconds behind the top boat from No. 5 Brown.
The Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Eight followed with back-to-back third-place times of 6:35.676 and 6:28.903, respectively. The V8 race came down to a photo finish with the Blue Devils edging Ohio State by 0.694 to earn a spot on the podium.
The Third Varsity Eight closed out the morning session with a strong second place finish, following closely behind the first-place boat from UCLA to record a time of 6:52.621.
The 3V8 improved their time by over six seconds in the afternoon session, powering past UCLA, No. 9 Michigan, Clemson and Iowa to a top time of 6:46.804.
Duke finished second in its remaining four races to close out action on the first day of competition.
