Breaking Down Duke's Busy March
Duke had quite the March, playing eight games in 28 days with six of those games coming against top-20 opponents. The Blue Devils went 6-2 in those games, falling to current Nos. 3 and 14, Syracuse and Penn.
Duke wrapped up a busy month with an 11-10 win over No. 18 Boston University. Over the course of the 28 days the Blue Devils traveled 2,808 combined miles across the four road contests.
Duke averaged 13.25 goals per game in the month while allowing just 8.50.
Brennan O'Neill paced the offense with 29 points and
Josh Zawada was right behind him at 28. Defensively,
Kenny Brower and
Tyler Carpenter were doing it all, combining for 34 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers.
The Blue Devils' man-down defense was excellent in killing off 74 percent of the penalties (20-of-27). In goal, rookie
Patrick Jameison averaged 10.4 saves per game, sported a .585 save percentage and an 8.12 goals against average in the month.
A Closer Look at the Duke Defense
Duke's defense has come together over the past few weeks, climbing to No. 4 nationally at 8.83 goals allowed per game. The Blue Devils are holding teams to just 24 percent shooting for the year and have held nine of the 12 opponents, including each of the past five, to under 30 percent shooting in a game.
Brower, regularly drawing the matchup against the opponent's top attackman, leads the team with 14 caused turnovers. Carpenter has done it all for the Blue Devils in his final season in a Duke uniform, playing the wing on the faceoff, stepping in down low on close defense a couple games and running on LSM. He has 13 caused turnovers and leads non-faceoff specialists with 38 ground balls. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Duke has held six opponents, including Princeton and Richmond twice, scoreless for 15-plus minutes this season and have kept 11 of the 12 foes off the scoreboard for 10-plus minutes in a game.
O'Neill, Williams and Naso Nearing Major Milestones
O'Neill is nearing a trio of career scoring milestones. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native is just 17 points away from becoming the fourth Duke player and 21st Division I player to reach 300 career points. With 189 goals to his name, O'Neill needs 11 tallies to join
Justin Guterding (212) and
Zack Greer (206) as Blue Devils to reach 200. His 94 assists are six shy of him being only the eighth player in program lore to have 100 goals and 100 assists in his career.
Williams is right on O'Neill's heals on the career goals list with 187. He ranks third among active Division I players and is fifth in Duke history.
At the faceoff dot,
Jake Naso needs 51 victories to reach 1,000 for his career. Already the Duke record holder, Naso would be just the seventh player in NCAA Division I history to reach the 1k mark. He is averaging 14.8 wins per game for his career.
Going the Distance in March
Duke sports science specialist
Jon Sedy keeps a close eye on the Blue Devils' workload throughout the season to help assure they are in peak performance when it comes to gameday. March was a busy month for Duke and Sedy and it showed in the final Catapult stats in terms of miles ran, cuts made and accelerations and decelerations.
Zawada and
Henry Bard led the way in miles ran at 42.5 across the eight games for an average of 5.3 per outing. In going up against the opponent's top attackman, Brower led the way with 797 total cuts.
Andrew McAdorey, playing at what looks like super speed 100 percent of the time, was second at 539 on the first midfield. In goal, Jameison covered 23.8 miles over the course of the eight games, which also includes warmup time on gameday.
A Look at Jameison's Numbers
The first freshman to start in goal for Duke since
Dan Wigrizer in 2010, Jameison has been steady between the pipes all season for the Blue Devils. He currently ranks second nationally in goals against average and fifth in save percentage. His current numbers are the best by a Duke goalie since Dan Loftus in 2008. Jameison has double-digit saves in seven games and posted a .600 save percentage in five outings.
