ACAPULCO, MEXICO — Duke wrestling assistant coach
Ethan Ramos secured his spot in the 2024 Olympic Games, after earning a step on the podium on Friday, March 1, at the 2024 Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifiers in Acapulco, Mexico.
Â
Competing in the 86kg Freestyle bracket, Ramos will represent Puerto Rico in the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, marking a significant milestone in his wrestling career. Ramos will become just the second representative of the Duke wrestling program to compete in the Olympics. He joins Bert Govig, who participated in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Calif.
Â
In his journey to Olympic qualification, Ramos earned two victories on Friday evening, one of the wins being over a two-time Olympian in Carlos Izquierdo of Colombia with an 11-6 triumph.
Â
"All glory to God," said Ramos. "I'm extremely thankful and excited to represent Puerto Rico. I hope I can be an inspiration for wrestlers especially on the island and hope that how I compete ultimately points to Jesus."
Â
Ramos, who is in his third season as an assistant coach with the Blue Devils, joined Duke head coach
Glen Lanham and the program after serving as a resident athlete with the Scarlet Knight Wrestling Club. During his time there, he contributed to the training of wrestlers four times a week, all while maintaining his own physical readiness to compete with Team Puerto Rico.
Â
Before his coaching career, Ramos distinguished himself as a standout student-athlete at North Carolina, where he was named to the ACC Honor Roll for all five years of his collegiate career. He was a two-time ACC Champion at 174 pounds and a 2015 All-American for the Tar Heels. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science, accompanied by a minor in Hispanic studies.
Â
The 2024 Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11.
