DURHAM – Madison Doucette collected 12 saves to lead No. 13 Johns Hopkins past No. 25 Duke, 17-13, Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Jays remain undefeated (3-0) as the Blue Devils dip to 1-2.
Offensively, Duke was led by graduate student Caroline DeBellis with a career-high five goals while Katie DeSimone reeled in three goals and two assists for five points. Defensively, Maddie McCorkle led the team with two caused turnovers while Reilly Traynor grabbed two ground balls. Lexi Schmalz and Kerry Nease collected five draw controls as Duke won the draw control battle, 21-11.
How It Happened
- Duke and Johns Hopkins were firing on all cylinders in the opening quarter as the Blue Devils took an early 6-4 lead after 15 minutes of action.
- DeBellis led the charge with an early hat trick while DeSimone and Mattie Shearer dished a couple of dimes each.
- Johns Hopkins scored the equalizer, 6-6, less than a minute into the second quarter with consecutive goals 43 seconds apart. Duke responded with two of its own before it was outscored 4-1 to close the half.
- Trailing by one, 10-9, Carly Bernstein found the back of the cage for the second time on the afternoon with 13:06 left in the third quarter. Duke's defense struggled to find an answer to Johns Hopkins' high-powered offense as the Blue Jays tacked on five more goals to lead 15-11 heading into the fourth.
- Duke cut the deficit to three, 16-13, with 11 minutes remaining, but couldn't find the back of the cage the rest of the game.
