DURHAM, N.C. – College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced its 2024 Men's Soccer Academic All-America teams, awarding three Duke men's soccer student-athletes with the recognition.
Junior
Drew Kerr and sophomore
Ulfur Bjornsson were named to the second team, while senior
Ruben Mesalles earned third-team honors on Tuesday.
Kerr, a native of Hillsborough, N.C., recorded a breakout season for the Blue Devils throughout the 2024 campaign. The Duke midfielder started all 19 matches and produced career-highs in all statistical categories. Kerr recorded five goals, 10 assists, and 20 total points. He recorded 27 shots (.185) and nine shots on goal (.333), registering a game-winning goal in nearly 1,200 minutes of action.
The 6-foot-3 forward from Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, Bjornsson, was a force at the top for the Blue Devils all season. Starting 18 of the 19 matches he appeared in, Bjornsson registered 13 goals and three assists, tallying 29 points to the lead all Duke scorers. In his first two contests of the season, Bjornsson tallied four goals and one assist, including his second career hat trick, helping Duke down UC San Diego on Aug. 25, 3-2. The Iceland native was honored as an All-ACC First Team selection and has now totaled 23 goals, seven assists, and 53 total points in his two seasons in Durham.
Mesalles, a 6-foot defender from Sarasota, Fla., earned a spot on the third team, after tallying 1,603 minutes for the Blue Devils this season. He started all 19 matches, tallying one goal and two assists. Mesalles helped guide a backline for the Blue Devils which tallied seven clean sheets including four in ACC play.
