DURHAM, N.C. – No. 5 Duke (10-2-4, 4-1-3 ACC) clinched home field throughout the ACC Tournament on Friday evening at Koskinen Stadium, defeating Notre Dame (7-4-5, 3-3-2 ACC) 4-0 to extend the Blue Devils unbeaten streak to 10 matches.
The Blue Devils are now locked into either a three-seed or four-seed in the ACC Tournament, pending the result out West against Stanford and California.
Graduate
Colton Pleasants opened the scoring early for the Blue Devils, hitting a banger from 22 yards off the left post and past the Notre Dame goalkeeper, 1-0. In the 39th minute, KK Baffour registered a point-blank shot from 15 yards out which
Wessel Speel swatted aside to keep the Blue Devils on top heading to the half.
Out of the half,
Ulfur Bjornsson tallied his 12th goal of the season, giving Duke a 2-0 advantage. Late in the second half,
Adam Luckhurst streaked past the Irish defense and was fouled by the Notre Dame goalkeeper in the box, earning a penalty kick. Luckhurst stepped to the spot and deposited his 11th goal of the season. To cap off the evening, graduate
Jack Zugay tallied his first goal of the season, putting the Blue Devils in a comfortable position down the stretch.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Graduate Colton Pleasants opened the scoring for the Blue Devils in the 13th minute, hitting one off the left post and into the back of the net, 1-0.
- In the 39th minute, KK Baffour registered a point-blank shot from 15 yards out which was denied by Wessel Speel.
- At the half, Duke led 1-0 on the scoreboard and held the advantage in shots 7-5, with Notre Dame leading 3-2.
- Just out of the half, Ulfur Bjornsson tallied his 12th goal of the season, receiving a pass from Drew Kerr and Pleasants, 2-0.
- Late in the second half, Adam Luckhurst was awarded a penalty kick, depositing it into the back of the net, 3-0.
- To cap off the night, Jack Zugay put the Blue Devils up by four, as Jose Ortega and Luckhurst began the action, 4-0.
NOTES
- Graduate Colton Pleasants tallied his fourth goal of the campaign, opening the scoring for the Blue Devils in the 13th minute.
- Sophomore Ulfur Bjornsson collected his 12th goal of the season, leading the Blue Devils at the top. He now has collected 27 points on the season and is second in the ACC for goals scored.
- Duke has now collected its 10th win of the season, marking the 11th time under head coach John Kerr that they have accomplished that feat.
- Graduate Adam Luckhurst tallied his 11th goal of the season, trailing Bjornsson by one tally heading into the postseason.
- Graduate Jack Zugay recorded his first goal in a Blue Devil uniform, putting the bow on the evening with Duke's fourth tally.
- The Blue Devils have now outscored their opponents 40-10 in the second half this season, scoring three goals in the final 45 minutes of action.
- Graduate Wessel Speel recorded his fourth clean sheet in ACC play, blanking Notre Dame on Friday evening. Speel registered four saves in the match to keep the Fighting Irish off the board.
- Duke's unbeaten streak moves to 10 matches, improving to 7-0-3 since the middle of September.
