BERKELEY, Calif. β For the third time this season, junior
Alaina McVeigh registered two goals to lead 12th-ranked Duke to a 4-0 victory over No. 20 California in ACC field hockey action Friday evening.
The four goals for the Blue Devils are one more than Duke (6-4, 2-1) had scored in live action in the past seven contests combined. Freshman
Julia Boehringer registered her first goal as a Blue Devil while
Logan Clouser finished her evening with a goal and an assist.
How it Happened
- The Blue Devils controlled action in the opening half, posting six shots and earning three penalty corners. Duke ended its scoreless stretch at 300:50 when McVeigh redirected a sweep off the stick of Logan Clouser in the 13th. Macy Szukics provided the insert as the Blue Devils got on the board for the first time since Sept. 13 against Old Dominion.
- Boehringer got in on the scoring action 2:15 into the second quarter with a great individual effort. The rookie forward beat a couple defenders along the endline, firing a shot on goal. The rebound off the initial save fell back to Boehringer and she put away the second chance.
- Cal threatened the Blue Devils late in the second quarter, earning a couple of penalty corners. Duke, like it has done all season, defended the corners perfectly to head into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
- Duke's success on penalty corners continued in the third quarter as Clouser got a goal of her own in the 36th minute. The veteran forward took a pass from Paige Bitting and dribbled through the middle of the circle and slid her shot inside the far past for the 3-0 lead. It was her first goal this season since the Aug. 30 win over William & Mary.
- McVeigh, with a nice piece of individual work inside the circle, capped the scoring with her own individual effort inside the circle for her seventh goal of the year. Maggie Kondrath provided the pass down the right sideline as McVeigh dribbled into the circle without pressure and fired her shot into the back of the cage.
- Frederique Wollaert played three quarters, making one save. Kaiya Chepow came on in the final period and made one stop.
Notes
- With two goals Alaina McVeigh became the 43rd Blue Devil to record 50 career points. She has 52 points for her career with 24 goals and four assists. Her 24 goals are tied for 25th in Duke history and is one shy of becoming the 25th Blue Devil to score 25 career goals.Β
