Coming off clinching the ACC Regular Season title in the last contest, the No. 1 ranked Duke women's soccer team (13-1-1, 8-0-1 ACC) heads to Chapel Hill, N.C., on Thursday, Oct. 31 for a Halloween match against eighth-ranked North Carolina (14-3-0, 7-2-0) at Dorrance Field at 7 p.m.
Thursday's contest will be aired live on ACC Network Extra with Daron Vaught (PXP) and Brianna Pinto (Color) on the call.
Duke will be the No. 1 seed in the ACC Championship and will play at either 5:30 p.m., or 8 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 7 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The Blue Devils won the ACC Regular Season title for the fourth time in program history.
On the season, Duke has scored 50 goals by 13 different players. Ten Blue Devils have totaled two or more goals. Duke has also scored two or more goals in 11 straight contests.
Robbie Church announced on July 22, 2024 he will be retiring at the end of the season and Duke will be promoting associate head coach Kieran Hall to head coach in 2025. Current assistant coach Carla Overbeckwill move to associate head coach in 2025 as well.
STORYLINES/OTHER BLUE DEVIL NOTES
Mia Oliaro has scored or assisted in eight consecutive matches. Overall, Oliaro owns six goals and eight assists during that stretch. Her eight-game streak is the highest current mark in the ACC and tied for the second-longest in program history.
Duke holds an all-time record of 1-4 in matches played on Halloween. The Blue Devils and Tar Heels have played once on Halloween in 2013 (UNC won 3-0) in Chapel Hill.
Mia Minestrella owns a goal or assist in four straight matches and is coming off starting for the first time at Wake Forest.
Blue Devil sophomore Mia Oliaro (2, 10) fifth year Ella Hase (T3, 9), and junior Devin Lynch (T3, 9) all rank in the top three of the ACC in assists and top six nationally.
The Blue Devils' 13 victories on the season mark the 16th time out of Robbie Church's 24 years he has led Duke to double-digit wins.
Maggie Graham has registered nine goals over her last 13 matches, while adding five assists. She owns a career-high 23 points on the season. Graham has scored or assisted in nine out of the last 13 contests.
Duke holds a +193 advantage in shots and +41 in goals on the season.
Devin Lynch scored or assisted in eight-straight matches prior to the Boston College match, which were also Lynch's first eight starts of the year. She totaled four goals and eight assists during that stretch. Lynch has scored or assisted in nine out of the last 11 contests.
Duke has scored 50 goals the last 14 matches, while the Blue Devils scored a total of 15 goals a season ago in 16 contests.
The last time the Blue Devils dropped a season opener was in 2017. Duke went on to win 19 straight after the loss and made an appearance in the NCAA College Cup.
Duke was shutout in the season opener for the first time since 2014, which was also a loss to Ohio State (1-0).
The last time Duke head coach Robbie Church dealt with a losing season was in 2014 and the next year he led the Blue Devils to the 2015 NCAA College Cup.
THE SERIES WITH NORTH CAROLINA
Duke holds an all-time ledger of 5-43-4 against the Tar Heels. The Blue Devils are 4-17-1 in matches played in Chapel Hill.
Duke is one of only 13 teams that have defeated UNC on its home field in program history. The Blue Devils collected wins at UNC in 2021 (1-0), 2015 (1-0), 2005 (2-1) and 1994 (3-2).
Duke won the last meeting in Chapel Hill on Sept. 17, 2021 with a 1-0 victory by a goal from Tess Boade off assists from Michelle Cooper and Olivia Migli.
In the only meeting a season ago, Duke registered a goal in the final minute of the match to finish in a 1-1 draw against top-ranked North Carolina in Durham. Kat Radercollected the game-tying goal with a minute remaining, off an assist from Cameron Roller. Duke's Leah Freeman was outstanding in goal as she registered three saves in the first half, while finishing the game with four. She also saved a penalty kick to help keep the score 1-0 in favor of UNC.
Head coach Robbie Church has faced North Carolina 31 times and is responsible for four of the five wins the Blue Devils hold against the Tar Heels.
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
North Carolina enters the match with a 14-3-0 overall and 7-2-0 ACC ledger.
The Tar Heels are 9-0-0 at home this season.
On the year, the Tar Heels have been led by Kate Faasse with 11 goals and one assist, while Bella Sember owns seven goals.
HEY, I KNOW YOU!
Duke sophomore Mia Oliaro attended North Carolina in 2023 as a freshman. She played in 20 matches. Oliaro is from Chapel Hill and went to Chapel Hill High School
North Carolina graduate student Olivia Migliis a 2024 Duke graduate. She appeared in 71 matches, while making 52 starts and logging 3,809 minutes. Migli scored 11 goals and added five assists for 27 points.
Duke assistant coach Carla Overbeck will face her alma mater as she is a 1990 graduate of North Carolina. She collected an 89-0-6 record at UNC and won four NCAA Championships under Anson Dorrance. Overbeck's daughter, Carson, is a senior on the UNC volleyball team.
Duke freshman Mary Long and UNC freshman Trinity Armstrong are currently playing with the U.S. U-17 Women's National Team in the FIFA World Cup in Dominican Republic.
Duke graduate student Maggie Graham and senior Baleigh Brusterplayed with UNC's Evelyn Shores at Tophat Club Soccer team. Shores also attended Westminster with Graham.
Phoebe Goldthwaite played with Abby Gundry at NC Courage Girls Development Academy for three years and also played with Aven Alvarez of UNC.
Duke's Cameron Roller and Mia Oliaro traveled to Spain with the U.S. U-19 Youth National Team this past summer. UNC's Aven Alvarez also played on the team.
Goldthwaite and Oliaro along with numerous UNC players helped lead the USL W-League U-23 squad to the championship over the summer.
Sophia Recuperoand North Carolina's Caitlin Mara were 4-year high school teammates at BB&N in Cambridge, Mass. Both were High School All-Americans and senior co-captains. They also played on the same club on FC Stars.
BLUE DEVILS NET HISTORIC VICTORY IN LAST MEETING
The Blue Devils entered the match 0-17-3 against North Carolina in Durham over the history of the series, before claiming the 1-0 victory on Sept. 5.
Head coach Robbie Church was 0-8-3 at home in Durham prior to notching the historic win against the Tar Heels.
Duke led 1-0 at the half, marking the first time in the series that Duke has led at the half since Oct. 16, 2015 in Chapel Hill as the Blue Devils won 1-0.
It marked the first time Duke led at the half in the series in Durham since Oct. 18, 1999. The Blue Devils led 2-0 at the half and ended up falling, 3-2.
Over the 52 all-time meetings, Duke shutout North Carolina for the seventh time. The last three victories for the Blue Devils against the Tar Heels have been 1-0 ledgers (2024, 2021 and 2015).
Duke totaled its sixth overall victory over a No. 2 or No. 1 ranked team nationally.
ACC CHAMPIONS
With the 2-0 win at second-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday, Duke clinched the ACC Regular Season title with an 8-0-1 ledger (25 points) with one regular season match remaining.
It marked the fourth regular season crown in Blue Devil history -- 1994, 2011, 2017 and 2024.
Robbie Churchhas led Duke to three of the four titles.
Duke was preseason voted seventh by the head coaches. Duke's run from seventh to first in the regular season is the biggest jump in ACC history (research back to 1998). Notre Dame and Duke went from sixth to first in 2016 and 2011, respectively, for the previous largest jumps.
AGAINST RANKED FOES
So far this season, Duke owns a 5-0-1 ledger against ranked opponents, including three wins against top 10 foes (Stanford, North Carolina and Wake Forest).
Maggie Graham owns four goals and three assists for 11 points in those contests. Devin Lynch and Mia Oliaro have tallied three goals and four assists for 10 points.
The Blue Devils have outscored the opponents, 15-6 and hold an 88-61 shot advantage.
MO NETS MORE HONORS
For the second straight week and the fourth time this season, sophomore Mia Oliaro has been named to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week on Tuesday, following a week in which she scored twice and registered an assist for the No. 1 ranked Blue Devils.
Oliaro registered her second career brace in the second half to lead Duke to a 2-0 win at No. 2 WFU in front of a record crowd at Spry Stadium. The two goals were tied for the most allowed by Wake Forest on the season.
Earlier in the week, Oliaro tallied an assist on the game-tying goal in the 55th minute as the Blue Devils registered a 3-3 draw with seventh-ranked Notre Dame. Oliaro played the entire 90 minutes in both matches at wingback and has collected a brace in two out of the last three contests.
She has tallied an eight-match streak of either scoring or assisting, which is the longest current mark in the ACC and tied for the second-longest streak in program history.
Oliaro now owns an ACC-best 20 points and eight assists to go along with six goals in league regular season action. Her 20 points are tied for the most in Duke history in ACC regular season action, while her eight assists are a new Blue Devil record.
NOTING THE BLUE DEVILS
Sophomore Sam Bodensteiner made her first collegiate start on the road at No. 2 Wake Forest on Oct. 27 as graduate student Nicky Chico was not available due to receiving a red card in the match before. Bodensteiner played the entire 90 minutes on defense and helped Duke shutout one of the best teams nationally.
After not scoring last season for the Blue Devils, Devin Lynch and Mia Minestrella have combined for 14 goals and 14 assists on the season for 42 points.
Robbie Churchnow owns 120 ACC wins over his career, which is the third-most in league history behind Steve Swanson (151) and Anson Dorrance (244).
Leah Freeman ranks first in the ACC with an .813 save percentage and first with a .649 goals-against average.
Freeman eclipsed the 7,000-minute mark at Wake Forest and now owns 7,089:17 minutes over the last five seasons.
Katie Grofftotaled her second goal of the season against Louisville and has registered two goals in each of the last four years.
Cameron Roller has played the full 90 minutes in eight out of the last nine contests. Groff has played the entire match in seven consecutive matches and eight out of the last nine.
Duke finished the month of September with a 5-0 ledger, which marked only the second undefeated month of September in program history (2017 - 8-0).
Maggie Graham has started a team-best 37 straight matches at Duke.
MINESTRELLA EARNS FIRST START
For the first 14 matches this season, Blue Devil sophomore Mia Minestrella provided key production off the bench with eight goals and four assists for 20 points. This earned the forward her first start of the season at No. 2 Wake Forest and she netted an assist off the game-winning tally.
Overall, this season she owns eight goals and five assists for 21 points.
After playing 16 matches a season ago as a freshman and not scoring on 23 shots, Minestrella has come alive this season.
She scored a goal in three straight contests (Notre Dame, Boston College and California) and four out of the last six contests.
Minestrella wasn't really herself as a freshman, after missing all of the preseason following surgery.
ON THE ROAD
On the year, the Blue Devils are 5-1-0 away from home with the lone loss coming in the season opener at Ohio State.
Duke holds a 14-4 scoring margin and 103-49 shot advantage in those matches.
Over the last five road matches, Duke has outscored opponents, 14-3.
The Blue Devils have tallied wins on the road against No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 7 Stanford and No. 17 California.
LIGHTING IT UP IN ACC PLAY
Duke has turned in a record-breaking ACC regular season so far with one match remaining.
The Blue Devils have scored Duke records for goals (30), assists (39) and points (99) in ACC play.
The previous highs were 23 goals in 2017, 31 assists in 2022 and 71 points in 2022 in 2022, 2004 and 2013.
Mia Oliaro's eight assists are also a Duke record, snapping Elisabeth Redmond's mark from 2007. Oliaro's 20 points also equals the Duke record shared with Michelle Cooper in 2022.
MIA SQUARED
The Duke duo of Mia Oliaro and Mia Minestrellacontinue to be one of the top tandems nationally this season as they have combined to notch 16 goals and 15 assists.
Mia squared have a knack for helping each other score as well as Oliaro has assisted on five of Minestrella's eight goals (Nebraska, SMU, Louisville, Boston College, Notre Dame)
Minestrella assisted one of Oliaro's goals against the Eagles on Oct. 19 and assisted on the game-winner at Wake Forest on Oct. 27.
The duo are also roommates this year.
WINGBACKS SHINING
Duke wingbacks Ella Hase and Mia Oliaro are shining in their role this season. Since moving to those positions against Nebraska in the second match of the season, they have combined for 10 goals and 19 assists.
Hase has totaled three goals and nine assists on the left side of the pitch, while Oliaro owns seven goals and 10 assists on the right side.
The duo has also helped lead Duke to eight shutouts on the defensive end and allowed an ACC-best nine goals.
