DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-set match, 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 11-15) to Miami Friday evening in ACC volleyball action.
Miami's Ariana Rodriguez tallied a triple-double to help the Hurricanes improve to 14-6 (5-4 ACC). The Blue Devils drop to 8-12 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Duke's
Kerry Keefe showcased an all-around performance with 26 kills, 10 digs and three blocks, while setter
Grace Penn dished 51 assists. Libero
Mailinh Godschall paced the defense with 19 digs, while
Breonna Goss added four total blocks at the net.
Miami's Rodriguez was outstanding with 12 kills, 24 assists, 16 digs and six blocks to lead the Hurricanes in the win.
How it Happened
- Duke jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as it hit .419 percent as a team and limited the Hurricanes to a .172 clip.
- Both teams struggled offensively in the second set, but Miami did just enough to tie the match, 1-1. Keefe led both teams with eight kills and a .353 hitting percentage despite Miami's eight blocks in the frame.
- Miami jumped out to a four-point lead (19-15) in the third set to force head coach Jolene Nagel to call her first timeout of the set. Miami continued to tally points and ultimately played to a .263 hitting percentage to take the lead in the match, 2-1.
- The fourth set featured a match-high 12 ties and three lead changes in the back-and-forth affair. Freshman Avery Hamlin and graduate student Ariana White combined for six kills and no errors to give Duke a nice spark off the bench to force a fifth set.
- Miami tallied its best offensive efficiency in the fifth and final set with eight kills and just one error on 20 swings to hit .350. The Hurricanes also added two aces and two blocks to spearhead them to victory.

- Duke has lost eight of the last nine matchups to Miami.
- The all-time series moves to 17-16 in favor of Duke.
- This is the first of two matches against these two programs this year – they will meet again November 29 in Coral Gables.
- Penn dished 50-or-more assists for the second time this season.
