Blue Devils Impress in First Home Meet with Virginia Tech

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Swimming and Diving opened the home slate on Saturday afternoon as the women defeated Virginia Tech 165-135, while the men fell 79.5-220.5. Senior Margo O'Meara collected a pool record on the three-meter board, tallying a score of 380.18, breaking Abby Johnston's pool record of 377.85 in 2010.

Senior Margo O'Meara began the afternoon on the three-meter event, tallying a score of 380.18, breaking the Taishoff Aquatics Pool record, passing Abby Johnston who tallied a score of 377.85 in 2010.
To open the swimming portion of the meet, Duke's 400 Medley Relay team of Ali Pfaff, Kaelyn Gridley, Aleyna Ozkan, and Tatum Wall posted a time of 3:38.20, finishing first in the event. The Blue Devils' relay team of Clare Logan, Ava Ippoliti, Martina Peroni, and Yixuan Chang rounded out the event in third place, touching with a time of 3:44.89.
On the men's side of the 400 Medley Relay, Duke collected a third-place finish in the event, as Michael Jiang, Jack Smith, Cameron Lai-Harris, and Milo Shue touched with a time of 3:18.21.
Junior Audrey Portello touched in second place in the women's 1000 Freestyle on Saturday, clocking a time of 10:12.82. Freshman Gemma Undercofler nearly finished in third, touching with a time of 10:17.88.
In the 200 Freestyle event, Yixuan Chang nearly took home first place, touching with a time of 1:49.82 to claim second.
Sophomore Ali Pfaff opened the first heat of the 100 Backstroke, touching in second place with a time of 52.57. Fellow swimmer and freshman Clare Logan tallied a third-place finish with a time of 55.30.
The men followed up that performance by the women with Michael Jiang tying for first with a time of 49.07.
In the 200 Butterfly, the Blue Devils' women swept the podium as Martina Peroni led the way with a time of 2:00.79, while Kyra Sommerstad collected a second-place finish and Isabella Abrajan touched in third.
In the men's 200 Butterfly, Yugo Tsukikawa touched in second with a time of 1:49.96, while Samir Elkassem touched in third clocking a time of 1:52.00.
Junior Tatum Wall clocked a time of 23.03 in the 50 Freestyle event, claiming first place, while KyAnh Truong touched in third with a time of 23.58. Wall followed up her first-place finish in the 50 Freestyle after the break, clocking a time of 51.15 in the 100 Freestyle to claim third.
In the 200 Backstroke, Pfaff collected a first-place finish in the event, touching with a time of 1:55.48, while Molly Donlan touched in third with a time of 2:00.73.
On the men's side of the 200 Backstroke, Jiang swam away from the competition, touching with a time of 1:47.70, while Jack Christian touched in third with a time of 1:52.78.
The combination of Kaelyn Gridley and Ava Ippoliti tallied a first and third-place finish in the 200 Breaststroke, as Gridley touched with a time of 2:15.64 and Ippoliti clocked a time of 2:18.29.
In the 500 Freestyle, Yixuan Chang collected a second-place finish, clocking in with a time of 4:59.03.
On the men's side of the 500 Freestyle, Yugo Tsukikawa touched in second, battling down the stretch with a time of 4:34.53.
Aleyna Ozkan gathered a second-place finish in the 100 Butterfly, touching with a time of 55.62.
The trio of Audrey Portello, Kyra Sommerstad, and Martina Peroni swept the 400 IM on Saturday, as Portello finished first with a time of 4:22.24, Sommerstad finished second clocking in with a time of 4:22.64 and Peroni touched in third with a time of 4:25.79.
To close out the meet, Duke's relay team of Tatum Wall, Clare Logan, KyAnh Truong, and Ali Pfaff collected a first-place finish in the 200 Freestyle relay, clocking a time of 1:32.86.

UP NEXT

Duke returns to the friendly confines of the Taishoff Aquatics Center on Friday, October 25, hosting South Carolina for a dual meet. Diving will begin at 4 p.m. with swimming beginning at 5 p.m.
