Blue Devils’ Barket Places Eighth in Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Led by a great run from sophomore Connor Barket, the Duke wrestling team tied for 14th place at the 2024 Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear in Mckenzie Arena on Tuesday.
Barket, a native of West Lafayette, Ind., highlighted the final day of the event, placing eighth in the 285-pound weight class. It marked his second podium finish of the season for Barket.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Barket began his day pinning Xavier Doolin of Northern Colorado, just 3:44 into the match and advanced to the consolation quarterfinal match against Jacob Sartorio of Appalachian State.
• In the consolation quarterfinal match, Barket went down by decision, 5-0, to Sartorio, which put him in position to wrestle for a seventh-place finish.
• Barket faced second-seeded Josiah Hill of Little Rock for the seventh-place finale, but fell in a tech fall to Hill, 17-2, to give Barket the eighth-place ledger.
• Freshman Raymond Adams was the first to wrestle for the Blue Devils on Tuesday and faced Tyler Knox of Stanford. Knox ended up pin falling Adams in the first period.
• Junior Logan Ferrero's first match in the consolation quarterfinals round was against ACC foe Gavin Cagle of Virginia. The match came down to a sudden death period with Cagle coming away with the win by decision, 12-9.
• Freshman Kwasi Bonsu matched up against Army's Thomas Godbee and went down by a major decision, 10-1.
• Adams (2-2), Ferrero (2-2), Bonsu (2-2), and Barket (3-3) finished with even records to end the Southern Scuffle.
• The Blue Devils collected 18.5 points throughout the event, tying with three teams for 14th-place in the team standings.
UP NEXT
• The Blue Devils return to dual match action on Monday, Jan. 8 hosting Appalachian State at 5 p.m. in Card Gym. The contest will be aired on ACC Network Extra.
