RANCHI, India – Former Blue Devil stars Leah Crouse and Jillian Wolgemuth are officially Olympic qualifiers. The duo helped lead the USA Field Hockey Women's National Team to a berth in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, taking second in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier.
USA Field Hockey secured its bid to the Paris this summer with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Japan in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier semifinal. Crouse started the game, helping to anchor the United States' defensive efforts. Wolgemuth hit a career milestone, playing in her 50th international match for Team USA.
In the semifinal, the U.S. fell behind 1-0 in the 38th minute. It was the first goal the red, white and blue had given up in the tournament. Ashley Hoffman tied the game midway through the fourth quarter and Abigail Tamer capitalized on another penalty corner three minutes later to give the U.S. the 2-1 victory.
"I am without words… It still doesn't feel real that we're going to Paris," said Hoffman. "After not qualifying last time in India, we came and honestly I think we put that to bed… We were just so present this whole tournament and I'm so proud of this group."
The United States qualifies for the Games for the first time since 2016 when the team placed fifth. A 16-player roster will be announced leading up to the Games which kick off July 26.
In the championship match, fifth-ranked Germany bested Team USA by a 2-0 score to take home gold. The United States returns stateside with silver medal.
Crouse started in the title game, while Wolgemuth picked up her 51st international appearance off the bench.
The 2024 Paris Olympics run from July 29 to Aug. 11. Hockey debuted in 1908 and India has the most gold medals.
