COLLEGE PARK, Md. β Duke outshot Northwestern 17-7 for the game but came up just short in a 3-2 setback to the No. 2 Wildcats in field hockey action at the ACC/B1G Cup hosted by Maryland Sunday afternoon.Β

How it Happened
- The Blue Devils opened the game's scoring in the eighth minute as McVeigh hit the back of the cage of a penalty corner strike. Hannah Miller provided the insert and Kira Curland was the stopper for the assists. It marked the third goal in as many games for the Landsdale, Pa., native.
- Duke extended its lead to 2-0 as junior Issy Carey used a phenomenal drag to beat her defender and get into the circle. She pulled Northwestern goaltender out of the goal and fed Logan Clouser in the middle for the tap in.
- Northwestern answered five minutes later after Duke was unable to clear the ball out of danger. Olivia Bent-Cole scored for the Wildcats.
- Duke fired off five shots in the opening frame, putting pressure on the Northwestern defense. The Wildcats had just two and no penalty corners.
- Northwestern finished on a rebound off the post to even the score in the 24th minute. Alia Marshall was there on the left post for the loose ball. Duke goalie Piper Hampsch made a good kick save in the final minutes of the half to send the teams into the break all square at 2-2.
- Duke had a chance to take a 3-2 lead early in the third quarter, but Northwestern keeper Annabel Skubisz made a nice save to keep the score tied.
- The Wildcats capitalized on another penalty corner to go ahead 3-2 at the 38-minute mark. Hampsch made the initial save, but Marshall was there once again for the rebound.
- The Blue Devils dominated action in the fourth quarter, earning five penalty corners and firing off eight shots, but couldn't come away with the equalizer.
- Duke outshot Northwestern, 8-0, in the final stanza and 17-7 for the game. The Wildcats managed just two shots and one penalty corner in the final 30 minutes. Skubisz made six saves in the victory, while Hampsch finished with two stops.

Notes
- Sophomore Alaina McVeigh has scored in each of her three games in a Blue Devil jersey. The Blue Devils have four different goal scorers on five goals this season.
- Hannah Miller registered her 22nd career assist to take over sole possession of the No. 20 spot on the Duke career list. She has 72 points for her career, one shy of the 20th spot in Blue Devil history.
- Duke is now 10-6 all-time in the ACC/B1G Cup.
