DURHAM – Duke graduate student
Hannah Miller registered 11 points from five goals and an assist to lift the 13th-ranked Blue Devils to a 9-0 victory over Longwood in field hockey action Friday night on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Duke got goals from four different players and had seven players with at least one point. Sophomore
Alaina McVeigh had two goals and an assist, while rookies
Kyle Massey and
Josephine Veen notched their first points as Blue Devils.
How it Happened
- Duke scored just once in the first quarter, as senior Alayna Burns tapped in a pass in the ninth minute from junior Josephine Palde on the right side. The goal was Burns' sixth of her career and the first of the season.
- Duke fired nine shots in the first 15 minutes and earned three penalty corners but led just 1-0.
- The Blue Devils came out strong in the second quarter, finding the back of the cage three times in 8:49 seconds, including a shot from Miller as time expired.
- McVeigh got the first of her two on the night, deking a couple of Longwood defenders before lifting it top shelf over the goaltender.
- Miller scored her first goal of the season, putting away a rebound off a save from the Lancer keeper. Three minutes later, the veteran forward turned in a phenomenal individual effort after a pass from Massey. Miller, just inside the circle, turned on her defender and struck the ball through the legs of the goalie.
- Duke held an 18-3 edge in shots after the first 30 minutes en route to finishing the night with 39.
- Miller continued her dominance in the second half, adding a third in the 38th minute and then redirected a Logan Clouser shot 39 seconds later for her fourth of the night.
- Junior Issy Carey tallied her first of the season with 2:24 left in the third quarter on a pass from McVeigh on the penalty corner.
- McVeigh and Miller capped the scoring for the Blue Devils in the fourth quarter. Veen recorded her first career point, providing the stop on the insert from Miller.
- Piper Hampsch finished with two saves to post her first shutout of the season. Longwood goalie Santia McLaughlin had 13 saves.
Notes
- Hannah Miller finished with 11 points to become the second different Duke player to have 10-plus points in a game. The 11 are second in Duke single-game history. Her five goals are tied for second most in Blue Devil lore as she is just the second different player to have at least five in a game. Melissa Panasci had five once and six once in 1995.
- Hannah moves to 17th on the career points list, tied for 19th in goals (30) and is still 20th in career assists (23).
- The nine goals at home are the most by a Blue Devil team since scoring 11 against Kent State, September 30, 2012.
- Duke posted its first home shutout since August 29, 2021 – a 1-0 win over Richmond.
