DURHAM – Sophomore shortstop
Alex Mooney has been tabbed as one of 25 shortstops on the 2023 Brooks Wallace Award Semifinals list, as announced by the College Baseball Foundation earlier this week.
The award honors the nation's top shortstop and is presented this summer by the College Baseball Foundation. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, a slick-fielding shortstop who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
The Rochester Hills, Mich., native has started all 54 games that the Blue Devils have played this season, recording a .336 average at the plate. He has gathered 73 hits, scored 64 runs and drove in 38 RBI. His 64 runs scored this season are fifth most in a single season, passing
Alex Hassan and
Quinton McCracken who both tallied 62 in a year.
Mooney has produced 27 extra base hits this season and is one of two players on the team to tally double-digit stolen bases and record 13 or more extra base hits. The Blue Devils open the ACC Tournament on Tuesday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, hosting NC State at 7 p.m.
