DURHAM – No. 24 Duke hits the road to Charlottesville, Va., to take on No. 12 Virginia Saturday. Opening draw is set for 2 p.m., on ESPNU with Drew Carter and Courtney Connor on the call.
LAST TIME OUT
- Virginia Tech's Maura O'Malley scored in the third overtime to send the Hokies past No. 20 Duke, 14-13, Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
- O'Malley was quiet all afternoon before notching the tying goal to send it to overtime with two seconds remaining and then the eventual game winner in the third overtime.
- Katie DeSimone and Lexi Schmalz each recorded hat tricks to pace the offense in the setback as Schmalz led all scorers with four points.
- This was Duke's first overtime game since 2019 and the first triple overtime since 2002.
- Duke has gone 3-6 since starting the season 3-0.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
- Virginia comes into Saturday's contest 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the ACC. It most recently captured an 18-12 win at VCU Wednesday.
- Offensively, the Cavaliers boast six players with 30 or more points and are led by Rachel Clark with 53 points from 44 goals and nine dimes. Ashlyn McGovern (52pts.), Morgan Schwab (47 pts.), Jaime Biskup (35 pts.), Kate Miller (34 pts.) and Macke4nzie Hoeg (30 pts.) round out the offense that averages 15.1 goals per game. Defensively, Annika Meyer and Maggie Bostain spearhead with 30 combined ground balls and 23 combined caused turnovers.
- Goalie Ashley Vernon has nearly 600 minutes in cage with a 12.22 GTAA and a .389 save percentage. Abby Jansen started against VCU and sports a 12.40 GAA and a .409 save percentage.
TWO OF THE DIVISION I GREATS
- Saturday's contest will feature two of the most successful Division I women's lacrosse coaches in Kerstin Kimel and Julie Myers.
- Myers ranks fourth among active NCAA Division I head coaches with a 356-178 career record while Kimel is seventh with a 338-187 ledger.
