DURHAM – Four Blue Devils registered hat tricks as the Duke women's lacrosse team downed High Point, 20-10, Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
The Blue Devils' offense was led by sophomore
Carly Bernstein with a career-high six points from three goals and three assists while
Katie DeSimone and
Katie Keller each added four points in Duke's high-scoring affair.
Lexi Schmalz and
Eva Greco rounded out Duke's hat tricks with three goals apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke got out to a quick 5-0 start to open the contest as six Blue Devils had a hand in the lead, led by DeSimone with two goals.
- Two of Duke's early goals were courtesy of free-position opportunities and finished 3-of-6 as a team this afternoon.
- High Point connected on two free-position attempts of its own to make it 5-2 before DeSimone and Greco extended Duke's lead to five (7-2) with just under 12 minutes left in the half.
- The Panthers netted two goals 44 seconds apart to make it 7-4 in favor of Duke. The three-goal deficit would be as close as the visitors would get.
- Duke tallied three more goals for a five-goal lead (10-5) after the first 30 minutes.
- The Blue Devils outscored the Panthers 10-5 in the second half to secure the victory. Bernstein tallied two goals and a dime in the third to pace the offensive contingent.
- Amanda Fedor dished her first two assists of the season as she found Greco and Jane DiGregorio late in the fourth quarter.
NOTABLES
- Duke improves to 7-7 overall and 6-1 in non-conference games.
- Head coach Kerstin Kimel captured her 339th-career victory and her 335th at the helm of the Blue Devils.
- Duke's 10 assists today is the second most this season.
- Duke outshot High Point 38-22 for the game and were flawless on clears, 17-for-17.
- DeSimone registered her eighth contest this spring with four-or-more points.
- Schmalz tallied her fourth-straight game with at least three goals.
- Goalie Sophia LeRose made her third consecutive start in cage and picked up seven saves.
- Maddie Jenner grabbed 10 draw controls to go along with a goal and an assist.
- Midfielder Veronica Hineman dished an assist and grabbed two ground balls, a caused turnover and a draw control.
- High Point was led by Mena Loescher with three points.
