DURHAM – No. 20 Duke returns to Koskinen Stadium Saturday to host Virginia Tech. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m., on ACCNX with Ben George and David Keefe on the call. This will also be Duke's annual Morgan's Message game.
BREAKING THE STIGMA | MORGAN'S MESSAGE
- Saturday's contest between the Blue Devils and the Hokies will help to raise awareness for mental health through Morgan's Message, a non-profit working on breaking the stigma on mental health in student-athletes in honor of former Duke women's lacrosse player Morgan Rodgers.
- Morgan's Message strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics. MM aims to expand the dialogue on mental health by normalizing conversations, empowering those who suffer in silence and supporting those who feel alone.
- There are now over 100 ambassadors at the high school and collegiate levels across different sports.
LAST TIME OUT
- Nine Blue Devils had a hand in the victory as 18th-ranked Duke tallied a 16-8 win at Pitt Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium.
- Junior Katie DeSimone tallied six points from four goals and two dimes to pace the offensive contingent while graduate student Eva Greco added a career-high four goals for five points. Senior Lexi Schmalz netted a career-high five goals on six shots.
- Duke has won two consecutive and has gone 3-5 since starting the season 3-0.
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
- Virginia Tech comes into Saturday's contest 5-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play. This will be the Hokies' sixth ranked opponent this season.
- Offensively, the Hokies are led by Olivia Vergano with 34 points from 27 goals and seven dimes while Ella Rishko and Kayla Frank each have 20 points to their name. Frank also leads the team in caused turnovers (12) and has 16 draw controls and 11 ground balls to pace the midfield corps.
- Goalie Jocelyn Torres has seen action in all 11 contests and sports a 10.20 GAA and a .472 save percentage between the pipes. Virginia Tech is fourth in the conference with 8.45 saves per game and sixth in GAA (9.73).
KIMEL'S COACHING TREE
- Head coach Kerstin Kimel has an extensive coaching tree that includes six former players/coaches in current Division I head coaching positions.
- Virginia Tech head coach Kristen (Waagbo) Skiera is the third head coach Duke will face this season under Kimel's tree.
- Skiera, the two-time All-America honoree at Duke and a Tewaaraton Award semifinalist, was named Virginia Tech's seventh head coach on June 11, 2021.
