DURHAM – Fifteenth-ranked Duke dropped a 16-10 contest to No. 2 Syracuse Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
Syracuse's Megan Carney and Emma Tyrrell combined for 10 points to help lead the Orange to the win.
Offensively, the Blue Devils were led by junior
Katie DeSimone with four points from three goals and an assist while senior
Caroline DeBellis added two goals and two dimes in the setback.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half was a back-and-forth battle as Duke's defense remained tough and held the third-best offense in the country to just six goals.
- Carney got the scoring going 48 seconds into the contest for her first score of the day before DeBellis notched the equalizer. Carney registered all three of Syracuse's goals in the first quarter while DeBellis, Lexi Schmalz and Maddie McCorkle got in on Duke's goal scoring.
- Even at three through 15 minutes, the Orange held a slight 3-2 advantage in the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead into halftime. Carly Bernstein scored her first goal of the game at 7:42 to make it 4-4 before Maddie Jenner and DeBellis teamed up just before the end of the first half to cut the Syracuse lead to one at the break.
- Syracuse flipped the script in the second half and outscored Duke 10-4, which included a 7-0 run through the entirety of the third quarter.
- Duke was held without a goal for 15 minutes as the Orange dominated offensively. DeSimone tallied three points in the second half to lead the team.
NOTABLES
- Duke moves to 4-5 overall and 0-4 in ACC play.
- Syracuse remains undefeated at 9-0 and 4-0 in the conference.
- Duke has lost five of its last six games.
- DeSimone registered her sixth hat trick this season and her fifth contest with four-or-more points.
- Jenner continued to dominate the draw circle and picked up 13.
- Kay Conway tied her career high with three ground balls.
- Goalie Shaye Fitzpatrick got the start in the cage and tallied five saves in just over 38 minutes.
