OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Duke rowing kicked off the 2023 season in strong fashion after sweeping the first five races to open the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Saturday.
The Blue Devils closed out the first day of the event with seven top finishes while claiming strong second-place finishes in their remaining five races.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Duke's Third Varsity Eight boat got the morning session started after posting a time of 6:53.535 to outrace Indiana, Wisconsin and Notre Dame.
The Varsity Eight then notched a top time of 6:27.503, over five seconds ahead of Indiana in second place and just under 10 ticks in front of Wisconsin in fourth.
The Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four kept the momentum rolling with wins of their own, each by a margin of at least four seconds.
The Blue Devils concluded the morning racing with the Third Varsity Four boat taking second behind Tennessee. The 3V4+ lineup consisting of coxswain Ava Liebmann, Meera Chakrabarti, Sophie Gower, Charlotte Sendek and Erin Heyeck posted a time of 7:20.540, just five seconds behind the Volunteers.
In the afternoon session, the 3V4+ boat of coxswain Amy Phan, Chakrabarti, Gower, StellaHaley, Heyeck powered past the crew from Indiana to garner a first-place finish with a time of 7:11.668, over 20 seconds ahead of the Hoosiers.
Duke's V8+, V4+, 2V8+ and 2V4+ boats rounded out the competition of the opening day with each stroking their way to second-place times behind Yale.
