Baker Shatters Meet, Facility Javelin Record on Day One

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Graduate student Dana Baker's prolific performance in the women's javelin, along with a top-five program mark in the men's hammer throw by classmate Myles Schreck, headlined a strong first day of competition for the Duke track and field program at the Shamrock Invitational.

At the end of day one, Duke sits in first place in both the men's and women's fields. The Blue Devils have totaled 27 points on the women's side while the Blue Devil men tallied 18 points.

TOP PERFORMANCES

Baker, a 2022 USTFCCCA All-American, delivered the stoutest performance of the day en route to winning the event in her season debut. Setting the tone right out of the gate, the Olathe, Kan., product launched the javelin 53.78m (176-5 feet) – the farthest of the field.
In addition to improving the distance on her No. 2-ranked throw in program lore, Baker also shattered both the seven-year-old meet (49.19m) and 12-year-old stadium records, respectively.
Schreck etched his name in the program record books following a stellar showing of his own in the men's hammer throw. Schreck made his fourth attempt his best, recording a throw measuring 57.22m (187-9 feet) to finish runner-up and slot himself No. 4 all-time on the Duke list.
Duke had an incredible showing in the women's javelin overall. In addition to Baker, five other graduate students had great outings while helping the Blue Devils command the event with four in the top five and six in the top 10.
Ilhame Tamrouti finished runner-up in the event behind as her javelin flew 49.03m (160-10 feet), while Kirstin West and Rylie Pease placed fourth and fifth, respectively, on throws of 45.50m (149-3 feet) and 44.02m (144-5 feet).
Amanda Sinkewicz (sixth) and Haley Rizek (eighth) rounded out the Blue Devils in the top 10, with Sinkewicz's third attempt producing her farthest throw of 41.61m (136-6 feet) while Rizek launched the javelin 40.92m (134-3 feet).
Also taking part in the hammer throw, Jide Akinjisola earned a top-five placement of his own as his first attempt measured 56.49m (185-4 feet), good for the third-farthest throw of the field.
Sara Absten and Anoush Krafian took part in the first four events of the women's heptathlon and sit in second and fourth place, respectively, at the conclusion of day one.
Absten has totaled 3,295 points thus far and has finished in the top three in each of the events while Krafian sits two spots back with a total of 2,873 points.

UP NEXT
On Friday, the action gets underway for the Blue Devils starting at 9:30 a.m., with the final three events of the women's heptathlon. The long jump, slated to begin at 10:30 a.m., commences the field events while the Duke track entries get going with the 110m hurdles at 11:35 a.m.
