MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Duke track and field had another outstanding showing at the Shamrock Invitational on Friday, as
Isabel Wakefield smashed the facility and meet record in the women's long jump while the Blue Devils posted five top-five program marks and won seven events.
Duke remains atop the men's and women's standings following the conclusion of day two's events. The Blue Devil women have created a great deal of separation between themselves and the second-place team, boasting a whopping 122 points. On the men's side, Duke has totaled 56 points.
TOP PERFORMANCES
- Wakefield kicked off the Friday slate with a bang by dismantling the seven year old stadium and meet records in the women's long jump. Wakefield made her fifth attempt her best as she flew out to 6.29m (20-7.75 feet) slotting herself atop the field.
- Over in the women's hammer throw, Duke had three Blue Devils place in the top five and four in the top six. Zoe Waddell led the charge for the group, winning the event behind a throw of 57.83m (189-9 feet), jumping up two spots to No. 2 all-time on the program charts in the process.
- Moorea Mitchell recorded the program's third-farthest hammer throw mark on her fifth attempt, recording a personal-best toss of 57.10m (187-4 feet).
- Jordyn Shubrick and Lily Lockhart finished fourth and sixth respectively via throws of 54.64m (179-3 feet) and 54.27m (178-1 feet).
- The men's javelin saw Scott Campbell deliver a personal-best performance and jump up to No. 2 all-time in program lore. Campbell set the tone from the jump with a throw of 72.16m (236-9 feet) on his first attempt – one that no one else came close to matching.
- Joseph DiDario came through on his second attempt and placed fourth overall behind his throw of 60.79m (199-5 feet).
- Duke's women's 4x200m relay comprised of Jenna Crean, Maddie Dietz, Lauren Tolbert and Madison Mulder joined in on the fun, making a revision of their own to the program record books. The quartet clocked 1:36.05 which slotted them No. 4 all-time in program lore.
- Max Forte had a solid showing in the men's long jump early in the afternoon as he flew out to 7.51m (24-7.75 feet) – good for fourth all-time at Duke.
- Anoush Krafian was stellar through the final three events of the women's heptathlon en route to a runner-up finish. Krafian's performance featured three top-three placements including wins in the long jump, 5.38m (17-8 feet), and 800m (2:28.91).
- Duke also put on an utter display of dominance in a pair of track events – the women's 100m and men's 4x800m relay.
- In the 100m, the Blue Devils snagged the top three spots in the standing while having five athletes finish in the top seven overall.
- Halle Bieber and Abby Geiser finished neck-and-neck in the dash with Bieber edging Geiser for the win, 11.34 seconds to 11.35 seconds. Megan McGinnis clocked 11.51 seconds to place third, Chyler Turner finished sixth (11.58) and Julia Jackson's time of 11.68 was good for seventh.
- Duke posted a clean sweep of the top three spots in the men's 4x800m race, led by the team of Matyas Csiki-Fejer, Nick Dahl, Jeremy Kain and James Lee who won the event with a finish of 7:40.45.
- The Blue Devil team of Connor Wells, Austin Gabay, Carter Dillon and Rory Cavan clocked 7:43.22 en route to a runner-up finish while the foursome comprised of Chris Theodore, Ryan Banko, Jared Kreis and Beck Wittstadt placed third on a time of 7:48.77.
UP NEXT
The men's discus and women's shot put set for 9:30 a.m., kickstart an action-packed Saturday slate for the Duke field athletes that'll also see them take part in the men's (12:30 p.m.) and women's high jump (10:30 a.m.) as well as the men's pole vault (11:30 a.m.).
At 11 a.m., the Blue Devils hit the track for the first of 10 running events starting with the women's 4x100m. Duke wraps up its season-opening weekend with the women's 4x400m at 4:05 p.m.
