DURHAM – The Duke volleyball program and head coach
Jolene Nagel announced the addition of three players to the 2023 squad as
Lauren Ingram,
Nikki Quinn and
Grace Thrower will join the Blue Devils in the fall.
LAUREN INGRAM
Dallas, Texas | The Hockaday School | 6-1 Outside Hitter | Skyline Juniors
Lauren Ingram comes to Durham as a 6-1 outside hitter from Dallas, Texas where she attended The Hockaday School and competed for Skyline Juniors.
Most recently during her senior year, she was nominated captain by her teammates and led them to a second-place finish in the Southern Preparatory Conference State Championship. She was named a PrepVolleyball honorable mention All-America selection, an AVCA honorable mention All-American and was named to the All-Southern Preparatory Conference All-Team and All-Zone.
During her junior season, Ingram was selected as one of the AVCA's "Best and Brightest" Award winners, which honors student-athletes who excel on and off the court. To be eligible, the student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.5 GPA and played in 50% of sets.
Off the volleyball court, Ingram excelled in the classroom and was elected by her peers to serve as the grade representative on her school's Athletic Board. Her brother, Harrison, currently plays basketball at Stanford.
"Lauren is an outside hitter who has experience on both the left and right pins and we look for her to give us depth in both of those positions on arrival to Duke. Her ball control abilities will be an asset to our gym and she continues to get better every time we see her compete. We are looking forward to seeing her develop during her final club season and here at Duke. Lauren has loved Duke for a long time and we're thrilled to add her passion to our program and welcome her family to ours."
NIKKI QUINN
Del Mar, Calif. | Torrey Pines | 5-11 Setter | Coast Volleyball Club
Nikki Quinn joins Duke Volleyball to Durham as a 5-11 setter from Del Mar, California where she attends Torrey Pines high school and plays for Coast Volleyball Club.
During her senior season, Quinn was named to the California AVCA All-Region team and to the Durango All-Tournament team as a four-year varsity letterwinner. In 2019, she helped Torrey Pines capture the Open Division California State Championship, leading to the Falcons being named National Champions by Max Preps. She has quarterbacked her club teams to qualification for multiple USA Volleyball Junior National Championship events and was part of a squad that earned a silver medal in the Triple Crown Elite Division, one of the country's toughest tournaments.
Outside of volleyball, Quinn was selected as the Torrey Pines Scholar-Athlete Award winner and the Falcon Award winner, which is given to a student who embodies high level athletic and academic excellence. She also serves as the President of the Society for Women in Engineering and was named an AP Scholar. Her father, Chris Quinn, played volleyball at Santa Clara.
"Nikki is a talented setter with excellent skill who has played at the highest level in Junior Olympics over the years. We love the way she competes and thinks strategically about the game, two things that will undoubtedly make us better. She is a highly motivated individual with many different interests and abilities, including archery and art. There is minimal idle time in Nikki's world. She is an eager learner and uses any time not devoted to volleyball or school to becoming knowledgeable about something new or developing her creative side. Her sunny demeanor and inquisitive self will be a welcome addition to our program."
GRACE THROWER
Manhattan Beach, Calif. | Harvard-Westlake | 6-2 Outside Hitter | Sunshine Volleyball Club
Grace Thrower joins the Blue Devils as a 6-2 outside hitter from Manhattan Beach, California, where she attends Harvard-Westlake and plays for Sunshine Volleyball Club.
As a senior this fall she finished the season with 102 aces, 400 kills and 259 digs, leading the Wolverines in all three categories as well as hitting percentage. That same year she was named to the 2022 AVCA All-America watchlist. In 2021, her team was the California Division I State Champions and Thrower earned All-Area honors. Additionally, she regularly competes for National Championships with her Sunshine Volleyball club team and she won a gold medal with the SCVA High Performance Select Team in 2019. Her older brother, Cameron, plays basketball at Penn.
"Grace is a talented outside hitter with great length and a high ceiling. She has trained with one of the top clubs in the country and chose to attend a rigorous high school, both of which have enabled her to prepare herself academically and athletically for her opportunity here at Duke. She is a team player with an excellent work ethic and high aspirations who will be able to impact our gym right away. The future is bright for Grace and we are excited to have the Thrower family in Durham."
