GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference is set to honor 53 student-athletes who have been selected as 2023 Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship Award recipients.
This year's list includes three student-athletes who will also receive the Thacker Award and 11 student-athletes who plan to pursue professional careers in their chosen sports and were named honorary recipients.
Duke honorees were
Finn Hossfeld (men's fencing),
Ruthie Jones (women's soccer) and
Michaela Reinhart (women's cross country/track & field).
Hossfeld returns to the fencing strip for his senior year as one of the most successful Duke fencers in recent years. A two-time All-American foilist, Hossfeld has numerous accolades under his belt. During his sophomore season, he finished tied for third overall at the NCAA Championship to collect his first All-America honor as he was named ACC Fencer of the Year that included an individual gold-medal performance at ACCs. Most recently in 2022, he placed ninth at the NCAA Championship for his second All-America nod and currently features a 31-18 record on the season. He also helped spearhead the relaunching of Fence for the Fight in partnership with the Duke Cancer Institute.
Jones, a native of Charlotte, N.C., concluded her stellar career in goal for the women's soccer team with 165 saves, a 0.76 goals-against average, 24 shutouts and a 41-14-7 ledger. She helped lead Duke to three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals, while starting 64-of-68 career matches. Jones' 0.76 goals-against average ranks second all-time on the Duke charts, while her 24 shutouts ranked fifth. She was a two-time All-ACC Academic Team and three-time ACC Honor Roll selection, while earning All-ACC accolades as a junior and senior.
Reinhart, currently a volunteer assistant coach for Duke track & field and cross country, competed for the Blue Devils from 2017-22 and set four top-five program marks. The Louisville, Ky., native was one of the Blue Devils' premier cross country runners year in and year out, tallying four consecutive All-ACC accolades and three All-Southeast Region honors. On the track, Reinhart amassed 10 All-ACC honors during her tenure and closed her Duke career on a high note, capturing her first USTFCCCA All-America honor in the 10,000m.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford and Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient will receive $6,000 toward his or her graduate education. Those honored have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
The ACC has selected postgraduate scholarship recipients annually since 1971. Over that time, the league has provided nearly $4.7 million to more than 1,000 ACC student-athletes.
This year's class of postgraduate scholarship recipients will be highlighted in a one-hour show on ACC Network that will air in May.
